Demand for the new 15-inch MacBook Air has fallen “significantly” following the back-to-school shopping period, and Apple is forecasting lower MacBook sales in the fourth quarter than in previous years.
The last three months of the year are typically a crucial time for the iPhone maker as consumers ramp up device purchases as part of the holiday shopping season.
Kuo said that the decline in MacBook sales was partly due to slowing demand from people working from home, as well as “waning interest” in mini-LED displays and silicon chips on Apple devices. For the 15-inch MacBook Air model in particular, sales this year could fall by more than 20%.
Apple has no plans to launch new products in the fourth quarter, which allows the company to “clear inventory and adjust product marketing strategies” for next year.
Meanwhile, CEO Tim Cook also made a surprise appearance in China at a gaming event in Chengdu. The move came after a report by Counterpoint Research showed that iPhone 15 sales in the world's second largest economy fell 4.5% compared to the iPhone 14 model.
The iPhone portfolio has so far contributed $156.78 billion to Apple’s total net revenue of $293.79 billion in the first three quarters of fiscal 2023, but overall net revenue is down 3.4% year over year.
Previously, during a visit to the mainland in early March this year, Cook described the relationship between Apple and China as “iconic”.
