The Canal 11 Bridge is one of eight rural traffic bridges built as part of the 2026 Chol Chnam Thmay Tet (Lunar New Year) program for military and civilians. The bridge is 20 meters long, 3.5 meters wide, and has a load capacity of 3.5 tons, with a total cost of 210 million VND. More than just a transportation project, the bridge opens up opportunities for trade and economic development, making travel for residents of Hon Queo and Linh Huynh hamlets more convenient and safer. At the construction site, Mr. Nguyen Van Van, a resident of Tan Hiep commune, along with workers from the Huynh Van On charity bridge construction team and local residents, are busily shoveling stones, mixing concrete, and pouring pillars. Sweat drips down his sun-tanned face, but his joy shines through as he shares, in a simple yet sincere voice: “I am happy to contribute to projects for the people.”
The new bridge was built right where the old wooden bridge had seriously deteriorated. Ms. Thi Mui, a local resident, and her husband, who came to help with the construction, said: “The old bridge caused people to fall all the time. When the military-civilian program came to build the bridge during Tet, everyone was happy. The people contributed their labor and effort to finish it quickly.”
Ms. Mui's joy didn't stop at the new bridge; the program also provided her family with support to build a solidarity house. Without land, the couple worked as laborers to support their four children. Their old house, with its corrugated iron roof, had long since deteriorated. The joy of receiving the new house was overwhelming. In the simple house, besides the bed and a small cupboard, the most striking feature were the certificates of merit earned by her daughter, Pham Thi Xuan Hoa, a 10th-grade student at Phan Thi Rang Secondary and High School. Having been an excellent student for many years, Hoa became the hope of Ms. Mui's family. "We're poor, but my husband and I worked hard to support our children's education. Having a new house means my daughter has a proper place to study, and I'm so happy," Ms. Mui said emotionally.
Not only Ms. Mui's family, but 50 new houses were handed over to poor and near-poor households in the program, each worth 60 million VND. These sturdy houses, built in the countryside, bring hope for a stable life and a secure livelihood. The 2026 Chol Chnam Thmay Tet (Lunar New Year) program, taking place from November 14, 2025 to April 10, 2026, is an activity with profound political and social significance. Besides building houses and bridges, the program also organizes free medical examinations and medicine distribution, and provides gifts to policy beneficiary families, poor households, and students who overcome difficulties and excel in their studies. Hundreds of gifts, scholarships, and bicycles were handed directly to the people with the joint efforts of many organizations such as the Provincial Red Cross Society, the Provincial Farmers' Association, the Provincial Military Command, the Department of Internal Affairs, the Provincial Association for the Support of Poor Patients, the Provincial Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin… All of them contributed to spreading the spirit of mutual support and gratitude in the community.
With a total resource of over 8 billion VND, the program implemented many practical projects and tasks, contributing to the local area's gradual completion of the criteria for building new rural areas. This also demonstrates the strong bond between the military and the people – a precious tradition that has been continued and developed through each stage. Comrade Le Van Phuoc – Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Military-Civilian Tet Activities – assessed: “Throughout the activities, many projects and tasks were promptly implemented. This included showing gratitude to families who contributed to the revolution, helping to resolve difficulties for poor and near-poor households; and supporting the Khmer people in Hon Dat commune to celebrate the traditional Chol Chnam Thmay Tet in 2026 in a joyful and warm atmosphere.”
