To help you find the perfect destination to suit your desires and needs during your winter vacation, US News has compiled a list of the best places to visit in winter. Hopefully, this brief introduction to the destinations below will help you plan your upcoming winter holiday.

Lucerne (Switzerland)

Whether your ideal winter holiday involves skiing, relaxing by a campfire, or simply enjoying the holiday spirit, Lucerne has it all. Snow-covered roads, ice rinks, and numerous Christmas markets make the city particularly charming. The Lilu Lucerne Festival of Lights in January helps maintain the festive atmosphere. Additionally, you can easily access many nearby resorts for skiing and snowshoeing. Enhance your perfect holiday by visiting one of Lucerne's many spas for relaxation.

Honolulu (USA)

Oahu blends international elegance and breathtaking scenery more than any other Hawaiian island. The state capital, Honolulu, showcases the island's charm. Nearby, you'll find numerous cultural and historical sites, from the ornate Iolani Palace to the austere USS Arizona Memorial at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. In nearby Waikiki are resorts with long stretches of white sand beaches. For a taste of rural Hawaii, visit the North Shore. Here, you'll find the most brilliant turquoise waters and winding walking trails.

Oahu is one of Hawaii's cultural and artistic hubs. The island boasts numerous music and dance festivals, including the Honolulu Festival and the Aloha Festival. You can also find many expressions of indigenous Polynesian and Hawaiian culture throughout the island. Be sure to visit the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum in Kalihi for a deeper look at indigenous heritage. Also, consider attending a luau, a traditional Hawaiian feast and cultural performance.

Sydney (Australia)

Sydney is both a relaxed coastal city and a thriving metropolis boasting some of the best surfing and water activities in the Southern Hemisphere. Whether you're looking to see a performance at the Sydney Opera House, soak up the waves at Bondi Beach, or explore trendy areas like The Rocks and Darling Harbour, Sydney has something for everyone. Even Sydneysiders possess the ideal blend of both worlds: fashionable attire with a relaxed coastal atmosphere and a carefree attitude.

Beyond its countless beaches, famous restaurants, and bars, Australia's most populous city offers a wealth of entertainment options. Thrill-seekers can climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge, while those seeking relaxation will appreciate a leisurely day at Coogee Beach, Manly Beach, or a peaceful stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens. There are also numerous seasonal festivals and events to experience in Sydney. Whether you're looking to enjoy a rugby match, visit the city's museums, or relax along the coast, Sydney has something for everyone.

Maldives

Looking for a romantic winter getaway? Head to the Maldives in the Indian Ocean, where dry weather, temperatures around 15°C, and some of the world's most beautiful beaches await. Spend your days sunbathing on the warm sands of a luxury resort, snorkeling among schools of colorful fish, and jumping between islands in a catamaran… these experiences will make the trip well worth the time and money.

Located in the Indian Ocean, about 600 miles southwest of Sri Lanka, the Maldives is almost completely isolated – and that's one of its many attractions. The best time to visit the Maldives is from November to April, when there is less rain and warmer temperatures. The island nation enjoys sunshine year-round, but also experiences a dry season and a rainy season. While the period from November to April promises the best weather, it's also the busiest time of year, and therefore, resort prices are very high. However, because each resort has its own island, you won't face the crowds of peak season at other tropical destinations with more public amenities.

St. Lucia

St. Lucia's warm winter weather (a Caribbean island nation) beckons visitors seeking an escape from snow and freezing temperatures. After a day in the sun, sip on some of the island's cocoa tea (made with local cocoa, spices, water, and milk) instead of your usual hot chocolate.

The lush, unspoiled St. Lucia is a magnet for visitors of all kinds. Some music lovers immerse themselves in the St. Lucia Jazz & Arts Festival in the spring. Meanwhile, thrill-seekers challenge their limits by climbing The Pitons or zip-lining through the rainforests of Chassin. Others prefer to relax on the beaches or retreat to one of the island's secluded resorts.

But what if you don't belong to any of these groups? Don't worry, start your morning by basking in the orange-tinged Soufrière sunrise, then end the evening with a dance party along Gros Islet. To discover the rest of the island's indescribable charm, you'll have to visit for yourself.

Costa Rica

For many, the allure of Costa Rica lies in its lush rainforests, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife. You can hike to active volcanoes, zip-line through cloud-covered rainforests, and surf on warm, turquoise waters… In this compact yet diverse tropical paradise, there are plenty of exciting outdoor activities. Nature seekers will wander through the dense forests while beach lovers will lounge on the soft sands.

However, for others, this small Latin American country holds a different appeal: its relaxed lifestyle. Its inhabitants—known as Ticos—often chant the motto "pura vida" (or "pure living"). This guiding philosophy can be applied from Costa Rica's central international capital, San José, all the way to the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

Lapland (Finland)

Even Jack Frost himself couldn't dream of a better snow-covered destination than Finland's Lapland. Finland's far north, with its 10- to 20-inch snow cover, allows for skiing, snowboarding, eSled tours, and reindeer sledding. Immerse yourself in Finnish culture by soaking in frozen rivers and lakes, or visit Rovaniemi, Lapland's culinary hub, to sample delicious Nordic cuisine. You won't see much daylight during your winter visit – the sun typically shines for only two to four hours in December and January. Make the most of those long nights by booking accommodation in a glass igloo to watch the aurora borealis dance above.

Galápagos

Winter in the Galápagos Islands is marked by warm weather and plenty of opportunities for wildlife viewing, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Plan your visit for December to see newly hatched giant tortoises, albatrosses waving before their seasonal flight, and brightly colored male iguanas attracting females for mating. Visiting in February offers a chance to attend the Santa Cruz Carnival.

With their pristine landscapes and diverse wildlife – from sea lions to marine lizards – the isolated islands of the Galápagos attract those seeking exciting encounters in the wild. After all, where else can you observe giant tortoises grazing, short-feathered penguins waddling along the equator, or blue-footed falcons performing their unique mating ritual?

In Usnews' list of the most attractive winter destinations, Hanoi ranks 7th. The news site describes Hanoi as follows: “Vietnam’s capital enjoys beautiful winter weather. You can visit top attractions like the Temple of Literature and savor a steaming bowl of pho. A winter visit also offers the chance to experience some of Hanoi’s best events, such as the Lunar New Year and the Huong Pagoda Festival.”
