The model “Healthy Living - Exchange Trash for Gifts” organized by the Youth Union of Tan An Ward is a typical example. Accordingly, for every 1kg of plastic waste, people will accumulate 1 point to exchange for practical gifts. Ms. Tran Thi Ngoc (Tan An Ward) shared: The program not only encourages people to collect and classify trash but also contributes to reducing waste to the environment.

Not stopping there, the “Children’s Day to Participate in Environmental Protection” of Cai Khe Ward has been maintained for 6 years, becoming a useful playground, helping students form the habit of keeping the environment green - clean - beautiful. Children collect paper, plastic, cans,... to exchange for notebooks and school supplies, both protecting the environment and supporting students in difficult circumstances.
In particular, the program “Exchanging trash for medicinal plants” initiated by students of Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy is very humane. With only 4kg of old newspapers or 40 plastic bottles, participants will receive a pot of succulents or medicinal plants such as mint or basil.
Mr. Vu Tan Tho, Secretary of the School Youth Union, said: “All proceeds from the sale of scrap are used to support disadvantaged students and fund charity activities and tree planting.” This model not only encourages a green lifestyle but also contributes to spreading humane values in the community. In addition to trash exchange activities, Can Tho City also focuses on solving the problem of pollution from pesticide packaging. Instead of littering, farmers are now conscious of collecting and bringing it to a collection point for safe disposal.
Collecting packaging is a small but meaningful action, helping to change farming habits, towards green and sustainable agriculture . Notably, to improve the efficiency of waste collection, a research team from Can Tho University has proposed applying a geographic information system (GIS) to optimize routes and reduce transportation costs. This technological solution promises to bring high efficiency in managing domestic solid waste in the locality. With creative and practical approaches, Can Tho City is gradually building a green living community, raising awareness of environmental protection and moving towards sustainable development.
