Works about storms and floods imbued with humanity

In the last days of August, many people were silent before the paintings with the theme of storms and floods by artist Quynh Thom. Each work is a piece of memory imbued with humanity, sympathy and sharing with the many challenges that our people have to go through. But above all, it is a strong belief in life and the future.

Painter Quynh Thom did not choose to depict the fierceness of natural disasters, but instead used the colors and lines to convey emotions to the viewer. The dark purple and blue tones, the brown patches that looked like mud, then suddenly appeared streaks of yellow and red light - the fire, the hands holding hands in the dark night.

Viewers see images of turbulent water, swaying roofs, and boats anchored in the middle of the river, and also recognize the warmth of human love, the appearance of people struggling to row, and the faith that is kindled and then rekindled after a series of stormy days.

It is an artistic story closely linked to life, bringing fine arts closer to the people. Each of Quynh Thom’s paintings is like a colorful epic, praising the enduring vitality, solidarity and faith after loss. From there, the public is moved as well as awakened to the sense of sharing and joining hands for the community in times of natural disasters and hardships.

Artist Quynh Thom’s works on storms and floods also contribute to enriching the Vietnamese art treasure trove on the subject of labor and life. In particular, it is also an artistic voice closely linked to the country’s reality, continuing the tradition of revolutionary art: reflecting pain but always looking towards the light, towards people.

Storms and floods pass, but humanity remains. And in the colors of artist Quynh Thom, we clearly see a resilient, humane Vietnam, always rising from hardship to move forward.

Looking at the series of paintings by artist Quynh Thom, viewers can feel the presence of nature and humans in a haunting relationship. In one painting, rows of skinny trees are bent in the wind and rain. Against the gray sky, a few roofs are barely visible above the water, evoking a sense of fragility, sadness, but also a burning desire to survive.

Another picture, a bridge at sunset with mixed colors. A vague tornado curves like a giant arm of nature reaching down. But in that scene, the last light of the day falls on the water, leaving a small streak of light.

Waves on the continental shelf.

Not stopping at the flood scene in the countryside, the artist also reaches out to the ocean. On the continental shelf of the Fatherland, the fierce waves roll day and night. But amidst the storm, the DK1 Platform stands firm with the resilient spirit of the soldiers. Through each painting, the artist depicts the fierceness of nature and above all, the bravery and strength of the people: resilient, compassionate and steadfast in the face of all challenges.

What is valuable is that artist Quynh Thom has been painting this series of paintings for a long time, from the fierce storm and flood seasons of previous years to the recent natural disasters.

He always sketches silently, cherishing every detail from reality and from memory. Therefore, each painting is both a moment and a flow of time, a story about the succession of storm seasons associated with the lives of the people.

Sharing about her creative journey, artist Quynh Thom emotionally expressed: "I was born in the North, and as a child I witnessed many storms and rainy seasons passing through my village. Later, when I grew up and traveled across the country, every time I heard news that the central region was struggling with floods, or that other regions were suffering from landslides and inundation... my heart ached."

"Flood season" - a work of many moods.

"For me, painting storms and floods, in addition to the harsh scenes of nature, also contains my own feelings and compassion for the many disadvantaged people. In each color, I hope to convey a message that we, no matter where we are, are all of the same 'gut', and together we will overcome all hardships," the artist said.

Painting about storms and floods, according to artist Quynh Thom, is not an easy challenge. The most difficult thing is to recreate the ferocity of nature without letting the pain overwhelm the light of humanity and faith.

The artist pays attention to every little detail.

If he only emphasized the sadness, the painting would become heavy; if he only looked for bright colors, it would easily fade the harsh reality. He had to find a balance between dark colors and streaks of hope, between the tragic flood scene and the shared smile. That is the difficulty but also the unique value of this series of paintings.

Few people know that, besides his creative work, artist Quynh Thom has been quietly participating in charity activities for many years. He quietly shares practical experiences with people in areas heavily affected by storms and floods.

And finally, wishing you a moment of peace.

Those trips, most importantly, were about civic responsibility and sharing, but also helped him feel more clearly the breath of life, the material for his paintings. Perhaps that is why each of his works is not only visual art, but also contains a heart that knows how to vibrate and accompany the people.
