Even though they are seriously ill or have lost their husbands, or are single mothers, the preschool teachers still suppress their grief to regularly be at school at 7am, smiling brightly to welcome the children.
Having suffered from thyroid cancer for 7 years, Ms. Le Thu Hien, a teacher at Kindergarten B, Hoan Kiem District ( Hanoi ), still sticks to her job of raising children. She believes that her love for the job has trained her to be patient and meticulous in everything. When she discovered she had the disease and had to be treated in the hospital for a long time, she also thought about quitting her job.
But, when her health was temporarily stable, the longing for school and children urged her to go to school again. Only when she heard the laughter and children rushing out to surround her did she feel that she was living a full and meaningful life.
Ms. Ly Thi Thu Huyen, teacher of Viet - Trieu Friendship Kindergarten, takes care of preschool children
Ms. Hien said that her house is near the Kindergarten Pedagogical School, so when she was little, she would look over the fence and see the dancing and singing and really liked it. Then, she took the entrance exam to the school, graduated and became a teacher. For her, being a kindergarten teacher is a very hard job. Every day, the teacher has to play many roles, from taking care of the children's meals and sleep to teaching and guiding them in their daily skills and habits. Ms. Hien hopes that there will be support policies so that teachers can feel secure in their profession.
This year, Ms. Hien could not hide her sadness when her colleagues received Tet bonuses according to Decree 73 (bonus equal to 10% of total salary fund applied to all subjects, including civil servants in public service units), but autonomous schools like Kindergarten B did not have the budget to pay bonuses.
“I got sick, but the difficult and stormy period has temporarily passed. The children are grown up, the economic burden has lessened. I only feel sorry for the young teachers, who have to raise their children while their salaries are low, and they don’t have a Tet bonus,” said Ms. Hien.
Suppress sadness, stick with the job
Ms. Ly Thi Thu Huyen, a teacher at Viet - Trieu Friendship Kindergarten (Hanoi), also has a special situation. Her husband passed away 5 years ago, she single-handedly raised 2 children and was the support of her elderly parents.
She shared that before Tet, when the leaders of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training came to school to give gifts and encouragement, she felt extremely happy and warm. Ms. Huyen has two children, one in 6th grade, the other is currently a second-year university student. Life in Hanoi is expensive, while the salary of a preschool teacher is low, but she does not complain but manages to pay for both school fees and family life.
“My child is at a disadvantage compared to many other children. He has to go to school early with his mother so that his mother can return to the kindergarten at 7 o’clock to pick him up. In the afternoon, he has to wait until the last child is picked up by his parent before it is his turn to pick up his child. He understands the situation, so he loves and helps his mother a lot,” Ms. Huyen confided.
With 26 years of teaching experience, Ms. Huyen is considered by the school's Board of Directors to be a dedicated and professional person. This school year, she volunteered to take on the 18-24 month class, the youngest class that requires the most care from the teacher. She puts aside all her family worries and sadness so that when she walks through the school gate, she can always be happy and smile brightly to welcome the children from their parents.
Despite all the hardships and difficulties, Ms. Huyen has never once thought of quitting her job. She hopes that in the new year, preschool teachers will receive more attention from leaders at all levels, and have a salary system that meets the needs of life. Then, teachers will feel secure and stick with their jobs without having to worry about other issues.
According to the representative of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, teaching is a special and difficult profession. Caring for and educating children of preschool age and children in special schools, teachers have to work many times harder. It is worth noting that teachers still make great efforts, overcome their circumstances, and do not hesitate to face the hardships of caring for and educating students every day.
