Mrs. Vo Thi Phung takes care of the green raspberry chrysanthemum bed.
From early morning, the family of Mrs. Vo Thi Phung in Vinh Hamlet, An Co Commune went to the field. Mrs. Phung tended the raspberry flower bed, her husband, Mr. Nguyen Van Du, tended the sedum flower bed. Her son and daughter-in-law watered the flowers and pulled weeds to keep them healthy. Mrs. Phung shared that this year, her son and daughter-in-law helped with the flower crop, so her family planted more than usual, with nearly 19,000 pots of various flowers.
Since the beginning of the sixth lunar month, her family has planted some types of chrysanthemums, and now they are also planting marigolds. The family grows familiar flowers during Tet such as sedum, chili, chicken color, marigolds... In particular, this year, her family has invested more in 2 types of chrysanthemums with 3,000 pots and tiger chrysanthemums with nearly 9,000 pots.
To have a beautiful flower pot that blooms just in time for Tet, growers must be careful with every step, such as: nurturing plants, watering, fertilizing, staking, pruning buds, preventing diseases... Not only that, farmers must also regularly monitor the weather to have measures to cover and light the flowers appropriately. Ms. Phung shared that growing chrysanthemums is quite hard and requires a lot of effort. From the day of planting to the time of selling flowers, it takes nearly 6 months. To keep up with the progress of the Tet flower crop, her family hired a few more workers to take care of the flowers. Although it is quite hard, thanks to the stable output and selling price in recent years, raspberry chrysanthemums are still the main crop of her family.
Ms. Phung said that since the beginning of the season, her family has invested nearly 300 million VND in the Tet flower garden. In the first days of the season, the erratic weather, especially the continuous heavy rain, has caused the flower garden to lose nearly 2,000 pots of various types. According to Ms. Phung, this year, although there is a lot of loss, the quality of the flowers is quite good. If the weather from now until the end of the year is stable, without much rain, the flowers will be of good quality. Currently, there are traders coming to order flowers to sell for Tet. Although the cost has increased, Ms. Phung said that her family will try to keep the price to support traders to have good prices to sell during Tet.

From early morning, Mr. Thai Van Minh and his wife in Vinh hamlet, An Co commune, along with their youngest son and a few workers, sowed marigold seeds. Mr. Minh and his son weeded, stretched ropes to make flower beds, and the workers and Mr. Minh's wife sowed seeds in specialized planting trays. Mr. Minh said that this year his family boldly invested in the Tet flower crop, nearly twice as much as last year, with more than 12,000 pots.
Flowers in the garden are more diverse, from American marigolds, Dalat chrysanthemums, red chrysanthemums, cockscombs, sedums...; this year he also experimented with planting 1,500 pots of raspberry chrysanthemums and 1,000 pots of lisianthus.
To grow chrysanthemums, Mr. Minh researched how to grow them from neighboring gardens as well as looked up information online. According to Mr. Minh, there is no flower that cannot be grown. As long as you understand the growing conditions of the flowers and monitor and care for them every day so that the flowers grow in accordance with the environment, you will be successful.
In the garden, he also experimented with grafting bougainvillea with many bright colors such as red, purple, orange, pink, and white. Mr. Minh said that the bougainvillea market is also very diverse, in the area there are many households that have invested in planting for many years, this year they are planting on trial to expand the flower varieties for sale next year.
Mr. Minh's son with a pot of chrysanthemums in the family's Tet flower garden - this is the first year his family has experimented with growing this type of flower.
Mr. Minh said that since the beginning of the season, the rain has been erratic, sometimes his flower garden was heavily flooded, causing a loss of 20%. From now until Tet, the weather will change a lot, so at this time he has not received orders from traders. “Growing flowers also depends a lot on the weather. If it rains a lot from now until Tet, the flowers will not grow tall and bloom in time for Tet. Therefore, I only receive orders from traders when the flowers have grown for enough months and days, with even, beautiful, and healthy buds. Usually, from the 10th of December, I start receiving orders from traders,” Mr. Minh shared.
Ms. Nguyen Mai Thanh - Vice President of the Farmers' Association of An Co commune said that in the commune, there are more than 20 households that make a living by growing ornamental flowers for sale during Tet. The largest number of these households is in Vinh hamlet. Flower growing has become a traditional occupation for many families here.
According to the assessment of the Commune Farmers' Association, the weather is stable and favorable for people to grow flowers. The types of flowers grown this year are more diverse and abundant than in previous years.
