Vinh Hoa farmers increase income from goat farming model

BDK - Vinh Hoa (Ba Tri) is a purely agricultural commune, the economy is mainly agricultural production. To increase income and improve family life, in recent years, farmers in Vinh Hoa commune have taken advantage of food from straw, agricultural waste, and local green food to invest in raising cows. Due to unstable cow prices, in 2015, people boldly switched to raising goats.

Farmers in Vinh Hoa commune have a fairly stable income thanks to the goat farming model.

Initially, due to lack of breeding stock, people had to go to other localities to buy goats for fattening. The investment cost for fattening goats is low, the main food is natural grass, there are few diseases, the average weight is 15kg/head. After 4 months of raising, each goat weighs 35kg, reaching the weight for sale. On average, farmers raise 2 batches of goats per year. To make a profit, farmers raise goats in a closed system by investing in breeding goats to have young goats to raise and sell, both limiting costs and ensuring the quality of the raised goats. Young goats are raised on average after 7 months to reach the weight for sale. Currently, the price of male goats is 140,000 VND/kg, female goats is 125,000 VND/kg, an increase of 60,000 VND compared to 3 years ago. Currently, farmers buy a breeding goat for 4 million VND to raise. After 5 months, they give birth to an average of 2 kid goats. After 3 months, they sell both the mother and kid, deducting expenses, and still make a profit of 4.2 million VND, nearly double the amount of 3 years ago. If the mother goat is kept for further breeding, after 2 months, the goat will continue to mate.

This is an important premise for Vinh Hoa commune to establish an Agricultural Cooperative. The activities of the Cooperative have created more favorable conditions for goat farmers in the area. Mr. Trinh Van Luot - Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Vinh Hoa Agricultural Cooperative said: "After its establishment, the Cooperative promptly supported its members, including those raising goats, in introducing quality breeds, transferring scientific and technical advances to apply in livestock farming, providing feed services, and introducing product outlets."

Thanks to the right change in livestock structure, suitable for local conditions, high and stable prices, most goat farmers in Vinh Hoa have a fairly stable income. Mr. Truong Van Dom is one of the earliest goat farmers, bringing high economic efficiency. He has achieved the title of Good Farmer in Production and Business at the provincial level. Currently, his herd has over 50 goats, of which 25 are breeding. Every kid born is raised to reach a certain weight and then sold. On average, each year he earns over 100 million VND in profit. "I think choosing goats as livestock is suitable, because they are easy to raise, low cost, have readily available food, and adapt to local conditions, especially in the current climate change conditions. Thanks to raising goats, my family's life is stable," Mr. Truong Van Dom happily said.

In addition to developing the family economy, goat-raising households in Vinh Hoa also support poor households by borrowing goats to generate income and improve their lives. Thanks to that, from a few initial households, the whole commune now has nearly 600 goat-raising households with a total herd of over 5,500 goats. This movement has contributed to increasing income and improving family life for many local farmers. By the end of 2024, the commune had only 32 poor households, accounting for 1.91% of the total number of households. In particular, the movement contributed to completing the income criteria, bringing Vinh Hoa to the title of new rural commune in 2020.

Vice Chairman of Vinh Hoa Commune People's Committee Nguyen Hoang Luc said: "In the coming time, we will continue to coordinate with departments, organizations, especially the Farmers' Association to create conditions for people to develop goat farming. In addition, we will encourage farmers to participate in cooperatives to receive transfer of scientific and technical advances, provide input services to reduce costs, link to introduce product output, limit being forced by traders to lower prices, in order to increase economic efficiency for farmers."
