As a potential technology trend of the era, artificial intelligence (AI) is a field that many young people are pursuing. Recently, Nguyen Ngoc Phuong Trang - a Vietnamese female researcher in the field of AI has successfully conquered three of the world's leading schools including Stanford University, Washington University, and National University of Singapore.
To achieve this success, Trang said she learned a lot from experts in the FPT Software AI Residency program and professors at the world's leading Artificial Intelligence Research Institute Mila (Mila - Quebec AI Institute).
Before pursuing her PhD, Phuong Trang was the author of two outstanding studies published and presented at the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), one of the world's leading conferences on AI. These are two projects in which Trang was the main author, directly coordinating the research implementation with a team of leading professors at Mila.
Among them, the project "Reusable Slotwise Mechanisms" was published at the NeurIPS 2023 conference. The second project "Towards Scalability in Gene Regulatory Networks with GFlowNet: Towards Scalability in Large Systems" was presented at the NeurIPS 2023 GenBio workshop.
Reaching this important milestone, Phuong Trang affirmed that it is impossible not to mention the boost of FPT Software AI Residency - a training program to develop young talents in the field of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
During the 2-year training period, the young girl was not only guided by leading scientists from FPT Software and major universities but also inspired to implement creative ideas.

"Personally, I feel very lucky to be able to nurture my passion for AI during my time participating in FPT Software AI Residency. Specifically, the time working with the program's partner, Mila Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, helped me gain strong inspiration from the diversity of cultures, teaching methods, and research directions that the world is pursuing," said Phuong Trang.
Not the most outstanding factor when she first joined AI Residency, the young girl has been persistent and made constant efforts to pursue her scientific research goals. Sharing sessions, in-depth working time with experts as well as a professional research environment have helped Phuong Trang gradually put her name on the map of young AI talents in Vietnam and the world.
"Regarding the decision to pursue a PhD, I prepared my application in early 2023 in a rather rushed manner. At that time, I had just expanded my research direction and had not officially published any articles at leading conferences in the industry. But thanks to the support and encouragement of the teachers at Mila and the program, I completed my application with 2 articles and received recommendation letters from the teachers at Mila, who are the world's leading AI experts," Phuong Trang added.
In addition to the systematic training foundation, Trang affirmed that the time spent at AI Residency is also an opportunity to expand relationships: "One of the advantages of AI Residency students is being able to connect with experts and talented friends in many research fields. I have been enthusiastically supported by teachers and companions in the process of preparing documents for doctoral studies. I consider this a blessing and cherish this special connection."
Launched in 2021, FPT Software's AI Residency is a program to train young generations for Vietnam's artificial intelligence industry through research and development of in-depth projects in an international working environment. The program offers the opportunity to work with leading AI experts, currently conducting research at many prestigious organizations around the world such as the Mila Research Institute, National University of Singapore, University of Texas, etc.
Graduates of AI Residency will have a solid foundation for research projects, opportunities to participate in international communities and forums...
As of 2023, FPT Software AI Residency has received more than 1,000 applicants for the program. The program has published 63 scientific papers, of which 43 were accepted and published at leading conferences such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, CVPR, ACL, EMNLP,...
Many graduates of the program have received doctoral and master's scholarships at top universities in the world such as Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania, National University of Singapore, etc.
In 2024, FPT Software's AI Residency program will open enrollment for the 5th batch from March 13 to April 17 with 4 rounds including application review (April 17 to April 20), entrance exam (April 21), project round (April 22 to April 28) and interview (May 2 to May 30). The program will start on June 7.
