Nguyen Thi Hong Men is currently a student in the Chemistry Department, Faculty of Science , Vietnam National University, Hanoi. Recently, Men won the BenQ Materials Scholarship – an international scholarship from a leading technology and electronics engineering corporation for students pursuing a career in materials science.
Mến will be awarded a two-year master's scholarship at National Yang Ming Jiao Tong University in Taiwan (China), with a guaranteed job placement after graduation for a similar period. Remarkably, she won this scholarship while still in her third year at the University of Natural Sciences.

Born into a not-so-well-off family in Hung Yen, Men's parents ran a small street stall. Seeing her parents working late into the night and early in the morning, enduring the sun and rain, and struggling to make ends meet , Men was further motivated to study hard.
"Despite the hardships, my parents have always allowed me to freely choose my own path and have placed their absolute trust in me. For me, that is the greatest blessing," Mến said.
Before enrolling in the Chemistry department at the University of Natural Sciences, Mến said that there was a period when she found Chemistry complicated and difficult to grasp, and even struggled with the subject.
She never thought she would love Chemistry, but when she entered 10th grade, her Chemistry teacher helped her solidify her foundational knowledge, turning dry lessons into lively ones. Mến gradually found her interest and began to harbor a desire to study a field related to this subject.
Having passed the high school graduation exam, Mến was admitted to the high-quality Pharmaceutical Chemistry program at the University of Science. In her first years of university, adjusting to a new environment, Mến, being a quiet and rather insecure person, faced many difficulties.
"Even so, I always prioritize my studies and try not to let other factors affect me. Luckily, studying at this school has given me access to a highly academic environment, and I've been well-prepared in Chemistry," Mến said.

She had never considered studying abroad, but in her second year, under the guidance of her professors in the Chemistry department, Mến gradually realized that studying abroad would provide her with many opportunities to experience, interact with, and learn in an international environment. She was particularly interested in universities in Asia, such as those in Taiwan (China), Singapore, and South Korea.
An opportunity arose when Mến learned about the summer exchange program at National Yang Ming Jiao Tong University, which included a selection process for the BenQ Materials scholarship. After careful consideration, Mến decided to prepare her application and interview, focusing on highlighting her personal aspirations and potential for growth.
At that time, the female student had a GPA of 3.65/4.0 and had achieved the title of "Outstanding Student" at the university level for two consecutive years. Simultaneously, from her second year, Mến also participated in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry laboratory of the Chemistry department to enhance her research capabilities.
During the interview, the female student demonstrated clear thinking, specific academic goals, research orientation, and her feelings about studying and living in Taiwan.
"Overall, I think my application clearly demonstrates strengths that align with the scholarship criteria. I've clearly identified my desire to develop in the field of advanced materials, specifically applications in medical devices. Perhaps this suitability is what led to my selection," Mến said.
Despite thorough preparation, Mến was still surprised, even "hard to believe," when she received the results.

As a mentor to students in the Pharmaceutical Chemistry laboratory, Associate Professor Dr. Mac Dinh Hung was impressed by Men's strong will to succeed.
"Winning a master's scholarship as early as the third year of university, like Mến did, is very rare. This partly reflects Mến's high level of effort and determination," said Professor Hùng.
Currently, Mến is focusing on completing her bachelor's degree in Chemistry at the University of Science, while also improving her English and Chinese skills to better adapt to an international learning environment in the future.
The female student plans to pursue further studies in the field of materials science, focusing on research directions with high potential for application in science and technology.
