According to the Icelandic Meteorological Agency, the volcano erupted, spewing lava flows through the Earth's crust, creating a large fissure 700-1,000 meters long. Based on measurements from the Global Positioning System (GPS) and monitoring of changes in the Earth's crust, the agency believes this was a relatively small eruption and there are no warnings of any impact.
Flights at Keflavik Airport in Reykjavik were also unaffected.
However, people at the luxury resort Blue Lagoon and the nearby town of Grindavik were evacuated.
Grindavik was once home to nearly 4,000 people before an evacuation order was issued in 2023, and very few have returned to live there now due to concerns about the constant threats from volcanic lava flows and earthquakes.
Experts predict that volcanic eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula will continue for decades, even centuries to come.
Iceland is an island nation located in the North Atlantic Ocean with numerous glaciers and volcanoes. It has witnessed a series of volcanic eruptions since the Reykjanes Peninsula geological system became active again in 2021.
