Volcanic eruption disrupts flights in New Zealand

Scientists warn that the volcano could continue to erupt for "weeks to months to come".

This is White Island, which erupted in 2019, killing 22 people. The island, once a popular tourist destination, is located about 50km off New Zealand's North Island and 200km from Auckland, the country's largest city.

National carrier Air New Zealand said it had cancelled 10 flights due to volcanic ash drifting onto runways at several domestic airports.

Satellite images show "mild" eruptive activity began earlier this month, according to research institute GNS Science.

They say it is part of a "typical eruption cycle" that has been recorded on White Island, also known as Whakaari to the indigenous Maori.

"This activity could continue for some time, from weeks to months," the scientists said, adding that some residents on New Zealand's main islands may smell volcanic gases or experience mild irritation of the eyes or throat, but the effects would not be severe.

New Zealand raised the volcano's alert level to three this month, out of five. Tours to White Island have been banned since the 2019 eruption.
