Nvidia will open a quantum computing research lab in Boston, CEO Jensen Huang said yesterday (March 20).

Nvidia added the program after Huang said in January that useful quantum computers were 20 years away. He tried to walk back that statement Thursday when he appeared on stage with executives from quantum computing companies. “This is the first event in history where a CEO invites all the guests to explain why he was wrong,” Huang said.

The Nvidia Accelerated Quantum Research Center, or NVAQC, will collaborate with quantum companies such as Quantinuum, Quantum Machines and QuEra Computing. Nvidia said the center will begin operations later this year.

Mr. Huang discussed the state of the industry with executives from dozens of companies, some of which are trying to make money from quantum technology before these computers outperform current ones.

Infleqtion CEO Matt Kinsella said the company can provide better clocks that can synchronize multiple classical computing chips. “We’re pursuing a proven monetization and market development strategy by leveraging areas where we have a real quantum advantage today,” Kinsella said.

Executives in the quantum field say that even if their machines surpass Nvidia's graphics processing units (GPUs) in certain tasks, such as understanding how atoms interact with each other, quantum computers still won't completely replace traditional computers.

“We’re using your GPUs to design our chips. It’s going to be a classical system sitting next to a quantum computer, going back and forth… I wouldn’t short Nvidia right now,” said IonQ CEO Peter Chapman.

Nvidia boosts semiconductor and electronics manufacturing in the US

Also according to the announcement from the head of Nvidia, the world's largest computer chip maker pledged to spend "several hundred billion USD" to produce semiconductors and other electronic devices in the US over the next four years.

Nvidia plans to invest in building a semiconductor and electronics factory in the US.

Huang’s comments illustrate how the California-based AI chipmaker is restructuring its supply chain, reducing production volumes in Asia amid unpredictable tariff threats from US President Donald Trump.

“Overall, over the next four years, we’re going to buy over $500 billion worth of electronics. And I think we can produce a couple hundred billion dollars of that right here in the United States,” said the Nvidia CEO and co-founder.

The comments are the latest example of how Mr Trump's "America First" policies are impacting business investment, even forcing corporations like Nvidia - one of the world's most valuable companies - to adjust their global footprint.

The Silicon Valley-based company, founded in 1993, has been a key driver of the AI market boom, with excitement around the technology pushing Nvidia's valuation to a whopping $2.9 trillion.

In recent years, however, Nvidia and other major US tech companies, such as Apple, have increasingly relied on chip manufacturing facilities in Taiwan operated by TSMC and Foxconn — a supply chain now threatened by China’s trade wars and territorial ambitions against its neighbor.

Mr. Huang expressed confidence that Nvidia is ready to handle any worsening situation in Taiwan, which is also vulnerable to earthquakes. “At this point, we know that we can manufacture in the U.S. and we have a sufficiently diversified supply chain,” Mr. Huang added.

Mr. Huang also said that President Donald Trump's administration may have to do more to support the US AI industry amid increasing competition from China.

For example, Huawei has become the most formidable technology company in China, “conquering every market it enters.” Mr. Huang argues that US efforts to contain the Chinese company have been “ineffective,” as evidenced by Huawei’s continued success.
