Former US President Donald Trump's campaign has requested additional resources, including military aircraft, to protect the Republican candidate in the final weeks before the election. After two assassination attempts on Mr. Trump in recent months, the former president's campaign contacted the White House and the Secret Service to request additional military resources to protect the presidential candidate. When asked about the information, President Joe Biden said he had directed authorities to provide Mr. Trump "anything he needs," "as long as he doesn't ask for F-15 fighter jets." "I've directed authorities to give him everything he needs, as if he were a sitting president. Give him everything he needs," Mr. Biden said. The request for military resources to protect the Republican presidential nominee includes aircraft and vehicles to support Trump's travel between campaign events and an extension of flight restrictions at his home and rallies. However, reports from the New York Times, Washington Post and CNN did not mention whether the Republican campaign would want fighter jets to escort Trump. Trump's presidential rival, Kamala Harris, is protected by the US Marines as vice president and uses a US military aircraft designated Air Force Two. The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting presidential candidates, confirmed it had received a request for additional protection for Trump, but did not provide details. “The former president is receiving the highest level of protection,” a Secret Service representative said, noting that the agency will continue to adjust its protective capabilities as needed to address emerging threats. The Secret Service was criticized after the first assassination attempt on Trump in July, which led to the resignation of its director. Since then, the Secret Service has increased its protection of Trump, including the use of drones, counter-drone technology and other protection and surveillance systems. Trump narrowly escaped death in July in Butler, Pennsylvania, after a 20-year-old suspect fired shots from the roof of a building, grazing Trump’s ear and killing a spectator. In September, another suspect was arrested by the Secret Service after he was spotted near Trump’s Florida golf course, apparently planning an attack. Last month, Mr Trump claimed there was a “major threat” to his life from Iran after he and his team met with representatives from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). The agency declined to disclose details of the meeting, although Mr Trump’s campaign said it focused on “real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States”.
