The Iran deal is awaiting a decision from US President Donald Trump, amid significant differences between Washington and Tehran over the nuclear program and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz – a strategic shipping lane in the Middle East.
According to Reuters, on May 29, 2026, President Trump said he would soon make a decision on a proposal to extend the ceasefire with Iran. This proposal aims to extend the truce, established in early April, by another 60 days, giving the parties more time to negotiate a lasting solution.
A White House official said the meeting in the Situation Room lasted about two hours, but did not specify whether Trump had made a decision. The official affirmed that the U.S. president would only approve a deal that was “good for America” and met Washington’s red lines, including the requirement that Iran never possess nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, a senior Iranian source told Reuters that an agreement was close but not yet ratified. However, Trump continues to demand that Iran end its control of the Strait of Hormuz and dismantle its nuclear weapons program. These are two conditions that Tehran has not agreed to.

Iran's semi-official Fars news agency, citing sources, said Trump's remarks were "an attempt to fabricate a non-existent victory." A senior Iranian source said the potential agreement would not include nuclear-related issues, while Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the management of the Strait of Hormuz should be decided by Iran and Oman.
Fars also said the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened on Tehran's terms after the US lifts its blockade on Iranian ships. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the lifting of the blockade, if it happens, would be gradual.
According to Fars, the parties agreed on the release of $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets. However, Trump said no money would be exchanged “until further notice.”
Reuters reports that Trump is under pressure to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and lower gasoline prices in the US ahead of the midterm elections in November.
