US President-elect Donald Trump has invited ChinesePresident Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration next month, CBS News reported on December 11, citing several sources.

The invitation to attend Mr. Trump's inauguration on January 20 in Washington DC was made last month, after the official US presidential election on November 5, and it is unclear whether Mr. Xi accepted the invitation, according to CBS.

The Chinese Embassy in the United States did not immediately respond to a request for comment, according to Reuters.

In an interview with NBC News on December 6, Mr. Trump said that he "got along very well" with Mr. Xi and that they "spoke as recently as this week."

Previously, in a congratulatory message to Mr. Trump on his victory in the 2024 US presidential election, Mr. Xi on November 7 "pointed out that history has proven that China and the US benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation," according to AFP citing information from China Central Television (CCTV).

Xi also stressed that the two countries must "find the right way... to get along in this new era, which will benefit both countries and the world." The Chinese leader said he hoped "both sides will uphold the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation."

Meanwhile, President-elect Trump has appointed several China hardliners to key positions in his incoming administration.

Mr Trump has also vowed to impose an additional 10% tariff on Chinese goods if Beijing does not do more to curb the trafficking of highly addictive fentanyl.

Late last month, Chinese state media warned Mr. Trump that his pledge to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods over the fentanyl issue could drag the world’s two largest economies into a damaging tariff war, according to Reuters.
