According to Techcrunch , on July 30, OpenAI officially introduced Study Mode in ChatGPT, a new feature designed to help students improve their critical thinking skills instead of simply searching for answers.
When this mode is enabled, ChatGPT will proactively ask questions to test the user's understanding of the lesson and in some cases may refuse to provide direct answers if the student does not engage with the content.
This makes ChatGPT an active learning tool rather than just a “homework answering machine.” This feature is rolling out starting today to all logged-in ChatGPT users, including Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans.
For the Edu group (students using ChatGPT via school-issued accounts), the study mode will be added in the next few weeks.
OpenAI said the launch of the feature is aimed at addressing the millions of students who are using ChatGPT as a learning assistant.
Vietnamese users can now use this mode on ChatGPT
Since ChatGPT was launched in 2022, many schools in the US have banned the use of this AI tool due to concerns about cheating and dependency. However, by 2023, some schools have lifted the ban, accepting AI as part of the modern learning environment.
OpenAI claims that the learning mode is the first step in its efforts to enhance ChatGPT's educational value.
Previously, rival Anthropic also launched a similar feature called Learning Mode for chatbot Claude in April 2025.
OpenAI doesn't currently offer a Learning Mode lock feature for parents or school administrators, but may consider adding it in the future, according to Leah Belsky, OpenAI's vice president of education.
OpenAI said it will continue to research and publish more data on how students use AI in their learning process, aiming to turn ChatGPT into a sustainable and effective educational support platform.
According to the record, Vietnamese users can use this learning mode on ChatGPT. Some users think that the effectiveness of this mode still depends on the learner's awareness.
If you want to get the answer quickly, the user switches to normal mode.
