Alice Oseman, the author of the series, said: “I was completely stunned by the news. Heartstopper is a work that I put all my effort into and for it to break the record was something I never imagined.”

She added: “ Heartstopper is a story that focuses on joy, love, and discovery . Seeing it resonate with so many readers, big and small, in some way gives me a sense of confidence. I am so grateful to all the fans who have supported me and this journey. You have made me feel so special.”

Oseman's latest release reportedly sold about 15,000 more copies than the book that came in second place on the chart, the cookbook Pinch of Nom: Express. The previous week's record for best-selling graphic novels was held by Joe Sugg, Amrit Birdi. and Matt Whyman for Username: Evie , with nearly 14,000 copies sold as of September 2015.

The aforementioned achievement is partly supported by the adaptation into a TV series produced by Netflix. Written by the author himself, the first two seasons have been released and the third is in production. In addition to the huge viewership, the first season of this series also won 5 Emmy Awards.

Bea Carvalho, head of books at Waterstones, said Alice Oseman’s success was “well deserved”. She added: “Her depictions of friendship, love and youth are positive, relatable and relatable, and have attracted a loyal following among teenagers and older readers.

“It’s great to see book sales soar thanks to the success of the TV adaptation,” Carvalho added. “According to the numbers, after the first week of airing, book sales were up over 220% across the series.”

To date, Oseman is the third best-selling graphic novelist since records began in January 1998. She has sold a total of £11.5m worth of copies, behind only Alan Moore (author of Watchmen and V for Vendetta ) with £13.1m, and Robert Kirkman (author of The Walking Dead ) with £15.2m.

The first four volumes of the Heartstopper series also hold the top four spots on the all-time graphic novel sales charts. Over 1.1 million copies of the five volumes have been sold in the UK since their release.

“Sales of graphic novels have exploded in recent years, fueled by the popularity of big screen and TV adaptations,” said Philip Stone, of Nielsen BookData. “With Heartstopper , the adaptation became a global phenomenon, receiving positive reviews from critics and audiences, which in turn boosted sales of the original book.”

The Heartstopper series began as a webcomic. Oseman began the series in her final year of English studies—a project that she felt was “a really weird hobby” at the time. Oseman crowdfunded the limited edition print run, reached her crowdfunding goal in less than two hours, and published the first book in 2019.

“We couldn’t be prouder to be home to the Heartstopper series,” said Hilary Murray Hill, CEO of Hachette Children’s Group, who has called Alice Oseman a writer and illustrator representing “a new generation . ” “It’s exciting to see graphic novels take off and change so quickly. Reaching this milestone is a true testament to Alice’s incredible talent.”

In April this year, Alice Oseman announced that there would be a part 6 of the Heartstopper series, and she said it was the last volume. In Vietnam, the above series was also quickly copyrighted and translated, currently stopping at volume 4.
