Seven years after Adama Traoré, a young black man, died in police custody, her sister Assa Traoré had planned a memorial march in Persan and Beaumont-sur-Oise, north of Paris. However, a court ruled against the march, citing the risk of rising tensions after the 17-year-old was shot dead by police last week. Disgusted by the ruling, around 30 similar marches against police violence have been planned across France over the weekend in Lille, Marseille, Nantes and Strasbourg.

Several unions, political parties and associations have called on supporters to join the marches, as France reels from allegations of institutionalised racism within the police ranks.
