Deep Sea Productions' diving experts, while conducting exploration and surveying on the seabed at depths of about 50 to 99 meters off the island of Öland, discovered a complex of ancient and majestic relics. Further archaeological exploration and analysis revealed that it was the wreck of a Swedish royal warship, approximately 25 meters long, dating back to the 17th century AD. The ship is named Svärdet in the local language (meaning "Sword"), or "Sword" in English. Photo: @Deep Sea Productions.
The Svärdet ships were decorated in the style of “splendid” ships, famous for their elaborate carvings and flamboyant colors, reflecting national pride and power. They were designed to intimidate enemies by showing off their size and flamboyance, but during the Battle of Öland at sea, this tactic did not work. Photo: @Deep Sea Productions. Having lost the battle, Admiral Lorentz Creutz ordered the Svärdet to turn sharply south when the ship suddenly flooded and capsized. Then, for reasons never fully explained, the gunpowder store on board also exploded, taking most of the bow and hull with it, along with more than 800 men, into the sea. Photo: @Deep Sea Productions.
