Việt NamViệt Nam16/01/2024

The majority of people in Phao Dai hamlet (Phu Tan commune, Tan Phu Dong district, Tien Giang province) live on aquaculture and fishing. However, due to a sandy land bank running near the Cua Tieu river, in recent times, Phao Dai hamlet has strongly developed food-colored vegetables such as watermelon, tomatoes, corn, beans, sweet potatoes and some other vegetables, with a total area of nearly 80 hectares.

In recent times, farmers in Phao Dai hamlet have taken advantage of the sandy land for agricultural production. By converting the crop structure to suit the soil conditions of each region, farmers in the hamlet have boldly invested in seeds, capital and applied science and technology to production, so the productivity of crops has increased.

In particular, watermelon is regularly grown by farmers in Phao Dai hamlet, with an area of over 10 hectares; the average yield is from 20 to 25 tons/ha. Watermelon is determined to be suitable for Phao Dai land, grows well in the dry season and gives a good yield.

Watermelon is grown by farmers in Phao Dai hamlet by making beds, covering them with tarps, making holes to put seeds in or planting seedlings in pots. Although the selling price may be lower than other places, it is often stable, so watermelon growers earn tens of millions of dong each year.

Sweet potatoes are also grown by farmers in the hamlet almost all year round because they are suitable for this land. In recent times, sweet potatoes grown in Phao Dai hamlet have produced high yields and stable prices, helping to increase farmers' income. Not only watermelons and sweet potatoes, but many other vegetables are also grown regularly by farmers in Phao Dai hamlet.

To ensure effective production, many farmers in the hamlet diligently learn from the experiences of their predecessors and regularly attend training courses on science and technology transfer organized by the Department of Agriculture. Since then, the techniques of crop cultivation of the people have been increasingly improved, so the production efficiency has increased.

Having the opportunity to visit Phao Dai hamlet at the end of the year, near Tet, we can easily see the green fields of melons, bean banks, corn rows…; farmers are pruning and taking care of the plants (this is the only place in Tan Phu Dong district). Since then, more and more good farmers have appeared in the hamlet, and the lives of the people here have become more and more stable.
