DTO - Implementing the plan of Cao Lanh City People's Committee on tourism development, contributing to building the local image, Tan Thuan Dong Commune People's Committee has deployed a plan to organize a rural market on Tan Thuan Dong Islet to promote local tourism development and help people have a stable income.

COUNTRY MARKET BECOME A TOURIST ATTRACTION
The rural market was launched and tested by the People's Committee of Tan Thuan Dong commune on December 3, 2022, in Tan Phat hamlet. Initially, the rural market had 24 households participating in displaying and trading local specialties, organizing exchanges, performing amateur music, Dong Thap folk songs, folk games, and cultural and artistic activities. Ms. Tran Diem Thuy, residing in Ward 1, Sa Dec city, said: “I have been to the rural market 3 times. Every week, I want to go to the rural market to relax because the air here is cool, the food and drinks are rich, and the prices are affordable. I like the shaved ice with syrup and ice cream the most because they are familiar delicacies from my childhood that only the rural market sells. I hope the rural market continues to develop and the model is replicated in other places to become a tourist attraction for people".
Visitors to Tan Thuan Dong island's rural market can travel by boat of My Phuoc Thanh Dong Thap Tourism Joint Stock Company departing from the 1954 Rally Monument (Hamlet 6, Ward 6) or passing through 2 ferry terminals: Hoa An - Tan Thuan Dong; An Nhon - Ward 6. In addition to sightseeing, shopping, visitors are guided to introduce the locality, see the fruit garden along the way. Traveling to Tan Thuan Dong island's rural market offers interesting experiences about local culture, finding the peaceful, pristine feeling of the countryside. Ms. Ngo Hong Suong (68 years old), who sells vegetables, tubers, and fruits at Tan Thuan Dong island's rural market, confided: "Every week, I go to the rural market to sell all kinds of wild vegetables and earn about 300,000 VND to improve my life. Since the rural market was established, I have had an additional source of stable income."
To build the rural market, Cao Lanh City People's Committee added over 650 million VND to Tan Thuan Dong commune's tourism development budget to repair items at the tourist wharf, build booths; repair Tan Thuan Dong tourist gate. The commune People's Committee spent 70 million VND from the local budget to repair the routes for bicycles to visit and experience; clean the environment, decorate the miniatures of the rural market area. My Phuoc Thanh Dong Thap Tourism Joint Stock Company supported the construction of the market with a budget of over 20 million VND and provided a boat to take visitors to the rural market for free.

Mr. Phan Hoang Huy - Vice Chairman of Tan Thuan Dong Commune People's Committee, said: "The rural market operates from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. every Saturday; the number of visitors per week ranges from 2,000 or more. Up to now, the rural market has operated 47 times with about 105,000 visitors from within and outside the province and foreign visitors, with a revenue of over 7.5 billion VND".

Up to now, the rural market has developed to 66 small traders participating in selling rural dishes, local specialties such as: fruits; vegetables, tubers, fruits; shrimp, crab, fish, mice, frogs; folk cakes... reminding visitors of their childhood memories. The first time coming to the rural market of Tan Thuan Dong island, Ms. Ngo Hong Trang (61 years old, living in My Luong town, Cho Moi district, An Giang province) shared: "When I was young, my mother often took me to the rural market. Later, life became more and more modern, so I no longer saw the rural market scene like in the past. The rural market here sells a variety of local specialties, many folk dishes and the small traders are also friendly and hospitable".

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh (62 years old), who sells banh xeo at Tan Thuan Dong rural market, shared: "When Tan Thuan Dong rural market was first established, I received financial support from the local government to maintain trading activities. Later, the rural market became more and more known, so more and more tourists came to the market, and my income was also better. Every week, I participate in selling at the market, after deducting expenses, I earn 700,000 VND".

Tan Thuan Dong islet's countryside market is increasingly attracting many tourists from everywhere because of the novelty and appeal of its rustic dishes. Mr. Phan Hoang Huy - Vice Chairman of Tan Thuan Dong Commune People's Committee, shared: "With the attention and leadership of Cao Lanh City People's Committee; the support of the city's departments, the companionship of My Phuoc Thanh Dong Thap Tourism Joint Stock Company. Along with that, the consensus and support of the people in the commune has created favorable conditions for the locality in tourism development. The countryside market has weekly activities such as: amateur music, boat racing, duck catching; experiencing various types of cakes".
Tan Thuan Dong islet's countryside market operates regularly every week and has become a form of community tourism that brings visitors from everywhere many interesting and novel things and brings economic efficiency to the locality.
