The General Surgery Department of Nghe An Oncology Hospital has successfully removed a fatty tumor weighing over 8kg from patient D.TH (56 years old, residing in Nghi Xuan district, Ha Tinh province).

In early March 2025, patient D.TH. was admitted to the hospital with a large tumor in the left thigh, causing severe mobility limitations. Clinical examination, combined with paraclinical tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), revealed a very large fatty tumor (approximately 182x188x250mm) located deep within the muscle, compressing important blood vessels and nerve branches.
Recognizing this as the direct cause of the motor impairment, the expert panel unanimously agreed to recommend surgery to completely remove the tumor, relieve compression, and restore motor function to the patient.
Notably, the patient had a history of four previous surgeries to remove recurrent lipomas at various medical facilities nationwide. However, the tumors continued to grow back. Unlike typical lipomas, Ms. H.'s lipoma was not only confined to the skin but also invaded deep into the muscle, intertwining with large muscle bundles, making surgery complex and potentially risky.

Dr. Nguyen Van Chuong, Deputy Head of the General Surgery Department at Nghe An Oncology Hospital and head of the surgical team, said: “ The tumor had a complex lobulated structure, interspersed among large muscle bundles, and close to important blood vessels and nerves. Therefore, the surgical team had to perform the dissection with extreme meticulousness and caution to minimize the risk of damaging adjacent structures.” After many hours of tense surgery, the entire tumor, weighing over 8 kg, was successfully dissected and removed.
After 48 hours of surgery and post-operative care, the patient was able to walk independently, had good sensation in the limbs, and showed no abnormal signs. Following a general health assessment, the patient was discharged and continued to be monitored and treated according to a specialized protocol.

According to Specialist Doctor Nguyen Van Chuong, lipomas are a type of benign tumor formed by the excessive proliferation of fat cells under the skin. Normally, lipomas grow slowly and cause little pain. However, when the tumor grows to a large size, it can compress nerves and blood vessels, restricting movement and seriously affecting the quality of life.
In the case of patient D.TH, the rapid recurrence and enlargement of the tumor could be due to genetic factors, constitution, or lifestyle. Additionally, the possibility of residual tumor tissue from previous surgeries could also be a reason for the continued growth of the tumor,” Dr. Chuong stated.
