Of the newly reported cases, 4,849 (95%) were male, while the remaining 252 (5%) were female. Nearly 80% of the cases occurred in people aged 15 to 34, with HIV infection rates particularly high among young people.
The average monthly number of cases in the first quarter of 2025 was 1,700, up 50% year-on-year.
Nearly 96 percent of new HIV infections in the first quarter were transmitted through sexual contact, with men who have sex with men accounting for the majority of these cases, the Philippine Department of Health said.
The Philippines Department of Health noted that from 2020 to March 2025, the Philippines recorded 4,146 HIV/AIDS-related deaths. Since 2016, the country has reported more than 500 deaths annually among people diagnosed with HIV.
The first case of HIV infection in the Philippines was reported in 1984. Since then, a total of 148,831 HIV infections and 9,221 deaths have been recorded nationwide.
