According to the Philippine National Police (PNP), 1,525 of the rescued were Filipino citizens while the remaining victims came from China, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Taiwan and elsewhere, CNN Philippines reported.
The raid came after the PNP’s anti-cybercrime unit obtained a warrant to search, seize and examine computer data at a foreign-oriented online gambling company (popularly known by its acronym POGO), in Las Pinas City.
The document, released to the media today, June 27, gives police the power to seize communications and computer data related to possible violations of the Philippines' expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2012.
Michelle Subino, spokesperson for the PNP's cybercrime unit, said the rescued men said they worked for an online casino, with shifts starting from 12 noon to midnight.
According to the official, only some workers were allowed to go out. Police believe those without documents were banned from traveling. The PNP also said the POGO facility had accommodation.
In terms of salary, Chinese citizens have the highest salary - about 40,000 pesos (about 17 million VND) per month, while citizens elsewhere, including the Philippines, are only paid 24,000 pesos (about 10 million VND) per month.
Authorities said the victims were recruited through online postings.
