The second round of competency assessment test scores tends to "skew right"

Today (June 12), the Ho Chi Minh City National University Competency Assessment Examination Council met and approved the results of the second round of exams in 2025.

Accordingly, the second round of the exam had 92,246 candidates taking the exam at 34 exam clusters and 80 exam locations located in 11 provinces and cities. In total, there were 152,792 candidates taking the exam in both rounds this year, equivalent to 223,179 exams. The distribution of this year's competency assessment test scores is close to the standard distribution, with a wide range of scores that helps to classify candidates' abilities well, facilitating the admission process.

The specific scores of the second round of competency assessment are as follows:

Causes

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment (Ho Chi Minh City National University), commented: "The score distribution of the second round of 2025 is close to the standard distribution, the score range is wide, and there is a slight "rightward" tendency compared to the first round". According to Dr. Chinh, this may be due to the following reasons. Firstly, out of the total number of candidates taking the second round, more than 65,000 candidates have taken the exam in the first round - a group of candidates with good ability or better, with test scores in the first round higher than the average. Secondly, the second round takes place about 2 months after the first round, so candidates have more time to review and consolidate their knowledge. At the same time, due to the experience in the first round, candidates have more experience in taking the test, have better time management skills, and better exam room psychology, so their test results have improved.

Mr. Chinh also added: "In both rounds, the distribution of exam scores clearly shows the characteristics of a nearly normal distribution with a balanced bell shape, showing that the exam is capable of classifying candidates effectively. The average score (662.78) and median score (653.0) are nearly equivalent, reflecting the symmetry in the score distribution, with no significant deviation towards high or low scores. The standard deviation of 159.70 shows a reasonable level of score dispersion, helping to clearly distinguish between groups of candidates with different abilities. The score range from 120 to 1,122 demonstrates the diversity in the qualifications of candidates, while helping universities and colleges easily determine the appropriate admission threshold for each group of candidates."

Candidates check scores from June 16

The Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment (Ho Chi Minh City National University) also said that the exam will see an increase in scale in the 2023-2025 period. In particular, in 2025, the number of candidates will increase by nearly one and a half times compared to previous years.

"Despite the increase in scale, the exam results remain stable: the average score fluctuates around 640–665, the median score ranges from 629 to 654. This shows that the test-taking ability of candidates has not fluctuated over the years and the stability of the exam is guaranteed," Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh further analyzed.

The quality of the test papers was maintained stably. The percentage of questions achieving good and very good discrimination was up to 94.2% in the first round and 96.7% in the second round, confirming the good classification ability of the test papers, in line with the goal of assessing capacity for university admission.

From June 16, candidates can look up their exam results at the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam portal at: http://thinangluc.vnuhcm.edu.vn . The electronic exam result certificate will be issued from June 23. From this year, this unit will no longer send paper copies as in previous years.

Currently, more than 110universities and colleges have registered to use the results of the Ho Chi Minh City National University's competency assessment exam for admission in 2025.
