Thailand women's volleyball team showed destructive performance to win against Sweden - Photo: VOLLEYBALL WORLD
The Thai women's volleyball team entered the match with the pressure of not being allowed to lose. Otherwise, they would be surpassed by the Vietnamese women's volleyball team in the world rankings.
Going into this match, they were ranked 20th while Sweden were ranked 24th. Looking at the not-so-far gap, it seemed like the two teams were on equal footing.
But the reality was far from that. The Thai team showed destructive form, while Sweden was completely helpless despite being taller.
The representative from Southeast Asia came up with a reasonable strategy, taking advantage of the agility of Pimpichaya, Thatdao, Chatchu-On to score points. The experienced setter Pornpun also showed good coordination ability, many times fooling the tall but slow and poorly-judged Swedish blockers.
Thailand also received enthusiastic cheers from the stands because they were the home team. The match ended quickly after only 3 sets with the scores 25-18, 25-20, 25-22.
With a 3-0 victory, the Thai women's volleyball team was awarded 11.52 points, raising their total points on the world rankings to 174.45.
They will officially move up to 18th place in the world. At the same time, the gap with the Vietnamese women's volleyball team will also increase to 18.67 points. The opportunity for coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet's team to usurp the opponent's throne at this year's World Championship is considered gone.
Not only did Thailand improve its ranking on the world rankings, it also quickly won a ticket to the next round after only 2 matches.
