Recently, my quail have been showing signs of lethargy, ruffled feathers, reduced appetite, and frequent wheezing. Could you please tell me what disease my quail might have and how to prevent and treat it?

The symptoms suggest that your quail may have Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD). This is one of the common infectious diseases that causes significant losses in quail farming. The disease is caused by the bacterium Mycoplasma and spreads rapidly through the respiratory tract, feed, water, farming equipment, and even eggs. If not detected and treated promptly, the disease can reduce productivity and seriously affect the economic efficiency of farmers.
When infected, quail typically exhibit lethargy, ruffled feathers, poor appetite, emaciation, runny nose, frequent beak shaking, and wheezing and coughing. In severe cases, quail experience difficulty breathing, gasping for air, a significant decrease in egg production, and may even stop eating and die. It's important to note that the disease is easily mistaken for the common cold. Self-treating with folk remedies such as giving them ginger or lemongrass water is not only ineffective but also causes the disease to spread more rapidly within the flock.
Chronic respiratory diseases also create conditions for E. coli bacteria to invade, causing secondary infections and severely deteriorating the birds' health.
To effectively prevent disease, special attention should be paid to hygiene in the poultry houses, especially during the rainy season or transitional periods between seasons. Quail chicks aged 2-6 weeks and laying quail are particularly sensitive and require more careful attention.
In addition, it is necessary to regularly clean and disinfect the cages, feeders, waterers, and farming equipment. Supplement the quail's diet with adequate nutrition and boost their immunity using probiotics, digestive enzymes, or multivitamins.
When quail show signs of illness, sick individuals should be quickly isolated to prevent the spread of disease. Specific antibiotics such as Suanovil 50, Tylan 50, or Norfloxillin can be mixed into the drinking water according to the recommended dosage. Treatment should be continued for 5-7 days. Alongside treatment, electrolytes and vitamin C should be supplemented, and the housing environment maintained to help the quail recover quickly.
