What is a vacuum pump?
Vacuum Pump is a technical device used to remove air, water vapor or gas molecules from a closed space, creating a vacuum or near-vacuum environment. This is an important solution in many production and research fields, where an environment with a pressure lower than atmospheric (below 100,000 Pa) is required. This device was invented in 1650 by Otto von Guericke.
Although creating an absolute vacuum is impossible in practice, modern machines today can completely meet the requirements of deep vacuum, serving effectively in industries such as electronics, medicine , food, chemicals, and many other industrial fields.

Basic operating principle of vacuum pump
Vacuum pumps operate on the principle of changing the volume of the working chamber to suck in air, steam or liquid, then compress and push them out.
Some types such as water ring pumps, oil ring pumps or dry pumps use pumping solutions to support the air suction process more effectively. Industrial pump lines often have much larger capacities than mini pumps used in food preservation.

Main structure of vacuum pump
Vacuum pumps consist of many important parts:
- Intake/exhaust port : Air intake and exhaust.
- Motor : Usually a 3-phase motor, providing power to the rotating part.
- Rotating parts : Including vanes, pistons, rotors, screws,... creating vacuum suction.
- Pump shaft : Connects and drives rotating parts.
- Gas ballast : Supports steam discharge and pressure adjustment.
- Frame : The outer shell that protects and shapes the machine.
- Gasket : Seals and maintains vacuum.
- Cylinder : Where the air intake process takes place.
- Other accessories : Pressure gauge, valve, control button,...
Common Classification of Vacuum Pumps
Vacuum pumps are classified according to many criteria:
- Working compartment : 1 compartment or 2 compartment type.
- Structure : Piston, vane, screw, double rotor, diaphragm, Roots, Turbo,...
- Working medium : Water ring pump, oil ring pump or dry.
- Pressure level :
- Ultra high: p < 10⁻⁵ Pa
- High: 0.1 Pa > p > 10⁻⁵ Pa
- Average: 100 Pa > p > 0.1 Pa
- Low: p > 100 Pa
- Capacity & application : From small household to heavy industrial.

Multi-industry applications of vacuum pumps
Vacuum pumps now play an essential role in many fields of production, research and life, especially in processes that require an environment without gas or moisture. Below are common applications of vacuum pumps in life and production.
- Manufacturing industry : Vacuum pumps are used to create vacuum environments in the production of electronic components, semiconductors, heat processing, metal plating, wood, plastic, paper, plastic pipe production and in the printing industry.
- Medical and pharmaceutical : Effective support equipment in suction, medical treatment, drug production and laboratory operations with high precision.
- Food and beverage : Used in vacuum packaging to extend shelf life, prevent oxidation, and preserve nutrients. Also used in non-heat extraction and fermentation processes.
- HVAC industry : Supports system cleaning, removes residual gas and steam in pipes, helps optimize operating performance and prolongs equipment life.
- Household and small applications : From home food packaging, livestock support, to use in automatic irrigation - vacuum pumps contribute to improving living efficiency.
- Other specialized applications : Including petrochemical industry, automobile manufacturing, paint and dye industry, solvent distillation, beer production, aircraft engine testing and CO₂ compression.
