'Walking' tree wins Tree of the Year 2024
According to New Zealand officials, this rata tree is 32m tall, equivalent to the height of a 7-storey building. This rata tree with a particularly attractive shape won 42% of the vote, surpassing 4 other trees to win the Tree of the Year 2024 organized by the New Zealand Horticultural Association.
The northern rata tree is over 30 meters tall, centuries old and stands alone in the middle of a field because it is the only tree surviving in a forest that was cut down about 150 years ago, according to LiveScience.
Scientifically named Metrosideros bobusta, this tree is called the "walking" tree because it looks like it is walking across the field.
The rata tree is New Zealand's tallest flowering tree and can live up to 1,000 years. Its roots and long, arm-like branches make it resemble the fictional Ents from the Lord of the Rings movies.
