According to Geotab , a UK-based company that provides vehicle telematics services, most electric vehicle (EV) batteries can last up to 20 years with very little annual degradation. That’s six years longer than the average lifespan of a car in the United States.
Over this long period, EV batteries only degrade by about 1.8% per year. After 20 years, if there are no serious problems, the driver can still travel about 64% of the car's original range.
This data comes from an analysis of data from more than 10,000 electric vehicles. High-voltage EV batteries can still fail, but the failure rate is very low. According to one study, electric vehicles produced in the past decade have a battery failure rate of less than 0.5%.
Battery degradation is not uniform and also depends on the region. The biggest degradation occurs in the first few years of a battery’s life, then slows down, and then drops off again as the battery nears the end of its life. Hot climates also accelerate battery degradation, so drivers are advised to park their electric vehicles in the shade, especially when charging.
Modern EVs have efficient battery cooling and heating systems to keep battery temperatures within acceptable limits, but it’s always better to keep the battery in a cool place rather than a hot one. This also ties into the issue of DC fast charging, which slightly increases the rate of battery degradation compared to slow charging.
Keeping the charge level between 20% and 80% for nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries is also an effective way to extend battery life. This limit does not usually apply to lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) batteries, but one study found that continuously charging an LFP battery to full can shorten its life.
Even if car owners follow all of these simple recommendations, there is no escaping the fact that batteries will degrade over time, whether they are used or not. Just as gas-powered cars have pipes and pumps that degrade over time if they are not used, electric car batteries will also lose capacity over time.
