Heart-wrenching sobs by the Lam River

“God doesn’t love us! Why are we so miserable?” That was the sob of Ms. Le Thi Huong when we visited her family, a fishing household living on the banks of Lam River, at the foot of Ben Thuy Bridge.

Misfortunes never come singly.

After storm No. 10, the small fishing village at the foot of Ben Thuy bridge was still desolate and desolate. In the dilapidated house, Ms. Le Thi Huong sat silently next to the altar of her 7-year-old daughter, Dieu Huyen. The terrible cirrhosis of the liver had forced her to leave her family. Earning a living by fishing, the couple's life was already precarious, so when they received the bad news: They could not save their child without money for a liver transplant, the couple was helpless.

These days, Ms. Huong cannot go to the market to do wholesale business. She tries to survive the difficult period by collecting and selling scrap. But the pain of the poor family does not stop there. The couple's second son, Nguyen Van Nhan, has also been medically diagnosed: He needs a liver transplant to treat congenital polycystic kidney disease and hepatopulmonary syndrome. Ms. Huong is like a soulless person, because now she does not know what to do.

“I could only hold my child and cry. He was so weak that he had to drop out of school. Now my husband and I continue to helplessly watch him get worse day by day. Where can we get the money to get a liver and kidney transplant for him?”

Fragile human fate

Loving his children and grandchildren, Ms. Huong's father-in-law, Mr. Nguyen Van Du, tried his best to help the couple. But at the age of over 70, he could not do much. Every day, he still went back and forth, helping his children mend nets and cast nets, but he himself was helpless and resigned to life.

Many times, Mr. Nguyen Van De, Ms. Huong's husband, thought about quitting his job on the river and going ashore to find work to make life less difficult. However, that thought was blocked because he was illiterate and it was not easy to find another job. The local government, despite their concern, could not help the poor family any further.

Hard life on Lam river.

Swallowing their pain, the fishing family tries to return to making a living on the Lam River. On lucky days, the whole family has enough money for food and some medicine for Nguyen Van Nhan. On days when the nets do not catch any fish, Mr. De and Ms. Huong can only "wait for God". They are in dire need of sharing from the compassionate community.
