The Premier League's statement following allegations of racism against Antoine Semenyo shows how seriously it is taking the issue. |
The opening match of the 2025/26 Premier League season between Liverpool and Bournemouth at Anfield on the morning of August 16 was overshadowed by an embarrassing incident. In the 28th minute, as Antoine Semenyo was preparing to take a throw-in, the Bournemouth striker was suddenly racially abused by a Liverpool fan.
Semenyo immediately reported the incident to referee Anthony Taylor. The match was stopped while Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola and Liverpool coach Arne Slot conferred with the referees on the sidelines. The ball was restarted three minutes later.
The Premier League website stated: “The match between Liverpool FC and AFC Bournemouth was stopped in the first half following reports of racist abuse directed at Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo from the stands.”
"This is in line with the Premier League's anti-racism protocol on the pitch. The incident at Anfield will be fully investigated. We fully support the player. Racism has no place in football or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are inclusive and welcoming environments for everyone," the Premier League added.
According to Sky Sports , a Liverpool fan was escorted off the pitch by security and Merseyside Police just before the second half. The Premier League and FA have pledged to work with the authorities to deal with the fan severely, and even Liverpool FC could be in trouble for allowing the incident to happen.
