Vietnam - Austria Relations: Exploiting Cooperation Potential in Key Areas

During a working session with Dr. Friedhelm Frischenschlager, former Austrian Defense Minister, on May 8 in Hanoi, delegates discussed the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Austria. The event, organized by the Vietnam-Austria Friendship Association and the Austrian Embassy in Vietnam, opened up many opportunities for cooperation in the fields of economy, education and culture.

Attending the reception and working session with Dr. Friedhelm Frischenschlager, on the Vietnamese side, there were Mr. Nguyen Do Tung Cuong, Vice President of the Vietnam - Austria Friendship Association; officials of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO); members of the Vietnam - Austria Friendship Association; and representatives of students from the University of Languages ​​and International Studies - Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

On the Austrian side, there were Austrian Ambassador to Vietnam Philipp Agathonos and embassy officials.

During the meeting, Dr. Friedhelm Frischenschlager shared with delegates an update on the situation in Austria, the European Union (EU) and the prospects for cooperation between the EU and ASEAN. He stressed that in the context of many changes in world politics, strengthening connectivity and coordination between the two regions is essential. According to him, the EU and ASEAN share an important strategic goal of protecting the international order based on international law and multilateral commitments.

Speaking at the meeting, Austrian Ambassador to Vietnam Philipp Agathonos highly appreciated Vietnam's increasingly proactive and active role in ASEAN, especially in initiatives to promote regional and global cooperation. The Ambassador emphasized the potential to expand bilateral cooperation between Vietnam and Austria in many fields, especially culture, technology education and tourism.

According to Ambassador Philipp Agathonos, the Austrian Embassy is implementing a number of contemporary art projects in Vietnam, while promoting cooperation programs in the fields of cyber security; tourism, especially hotel management training and high-quality service development. In the field of education and vocational training, there are currently more than 70 Vietnamese students studying nursing in the city of Krems (Austria) and this number is expected to increase to 150 in the near future.

At the event, students from the University of Languages ​​and International Studies - Vietnam National University, Hanoi actively participated in the discussion and asked questions about opportunities to study, work and experience culture in Austria. They were particularly interested in scholarship programs, training courses in German and English as well as career prospects in fields such as languages, tourism and nursing.

The Austrian Ambassador highly appreciated the initiative and spirit of international integration of Vietnamese students, and encouraged young people to boldly learn and grasp opportunities from the Austrian education system.

On behalf of the Vietnam - Austria Friendship Association, Mr. Nguyen Do Tung Cuong affirmed that the Association will continue to closely coordinate with the Austrian Embassy in Vietnam to further promote cooperation between the two countries. In the coming time, the Association will focus on three main areas, including economics - trade, science - technology - education and cultural - artistic exchange. The Association will also continue to play a bridging role in supporting students to access information and seek study opportunities in Austria.

Speaking at the meeting, Dr. Frischenschlager expressed his joy at visiting Vietnam for the first time. He shared that his interest in Vietnam was formed early, stemming from his frequent exposure to news about historical events that took place in the 20th century, especially during the war period.

During this visit, he visited a number of historical museums in Hanoi to learn more about the stages of development as well as the challenging journeys that Vietnam has gone through.
