Cameroon is a country in Central Africa, often referred to as the “heart of Africa”. Its major cities are interspersed with mountains and beaches, creating a very distinctive landscape. Here are some of the most famous places in Cameroon.
1. Yaounde
Yaounde is the capital of Cameroon, a perfectly planned city spread over seven hills.
The numerous buildings here are separated by lush green stretches of land and high elevations. The government buildings here attract culture lovers and are very unusual.
2. Maroua
Maroua is a dusty place with beige houses and red dirt streets. It is the place to experience Cameroonian culture at its most authentic. The markets here are bustling and some of the best in the country.
3. Limbe
Situated on the slopes of Mount Cameroon, an active volcano, Limbe is a great city for visitors looking to explore the beauty of Cameroon. Botanical gardens, waterfalls, national parks and nearby mountains are some of Limbe's highlights.
4. Douala
Douala has a reputation for being dusty, but that doesn't stop tourists from visiting. It is the largest city in Cameroon, home to the country's largest airport, port and commercial centre.
5. Waza National Park
This park is home to the largest variety of wildlife in the country. You can drive in the park yourself, but you need a guide. This place is suitable for adventurous tourists.
6. Bamenda
Bamenda is a large city with all the amenities and facilities needed for tourists . It has many tourist attractions, lush landscapes and hidden villages. The surrounding landscape is suitable for mountain climbing and hiking.
7. Fumban
For art lovers, Foumban is a must-see city in Cameroon. The city is famous for its music and architecture.
It is also the city in Cameroon with the largest Muslim population in the country. The Royal Palace and its adjacent museum are the main attractions here, although the city's mosque is also worth a visit.
8. Bafoussam
Although at first glance the city may seem busy and boring, it rewards those who explore.
The people here are very friendly and hospitable. Accommodation in the city is affordable, and there is a museum you should not miss.
9. Kribi
Kribi has beautiful beaches, fresh seafood, plenty of reasonably priced hotels. If you’re looking for something different to do after a day of lounging on the beach, the Chutes de la Lobe waterfalls, just 8km south of town, are a great option.
10. Korup National Park
Korup National Park is a large area covering 126,000 hectares of forest. Many rare bird species are found in the park.
If you are lucky you may see elephants and chimpanzees. Access to the park can be difficult, especially during the wet months when road conditions are poor.
11. Dschang
This city in western Cameroon is growing rapidly and its population has increased tenfold in the past 20 years.
The main attractions in the city are the Museum of Civilization, which explores the history of Cameroon through its tribes and cultures, and another film museum.
12. Garoua
The city is an industrial hub and thrives as a river port exporting everything from petroleum to animal hides. Several conservation areas in the area are tourist attractions in Garoua. The city has few attractions but plenty of accommodation.
13. Campo Ma'an National Park
This vast national park covers 264,000 hectares. The landscape is diverse, from mountains to rainforests, and is home to many rare species of animals. Private transport is available for visitors who want to explore the area.
