Small house, big love

In the mild September weather, many border areas of the province are bustling with joy when more poor families are given new, spacious houses. The houses are just enough for daily living, but contain deep affection and humane companionship of the armed forces and local authorities towards the people in the border areas.

Ms. Do Thi Cam Tien, residing in Nhon Hoi commune, has an incomplete situation. Growing up and getting married, she and her husband have not been able to build a home of their own and still live with their parents. Her husband is a militia member of the Commune Military Command, with a monthly allowance of about 7 million VND. She works as a nail technician, earning more than 100,000 VND on busy days, and only sighs on quiet days. Meanwhile, their 18-month-old child needs a lot of care. Their dream of having their own home is always buried by money.

Then one day, they were given a "Border Shelter" of 62 square meters . Although the roof and walls were made of corrugated iron and the wooden floor was simple, it was sturdy. The total cost of building the house was more than 100 million VND, beyond the couple's ability. Therefore, they received a "support" of 60 million VND from the Military Region 9 Command, the rest was collected by the family. For others, the house is quite normal, but for poor households in the border area like Ms. Tien, that house is a dream after many years of living in "freelancing".

Ms. Tien was moved: “I am grateful for the care of the soldiers, local authorities and neighbors. With this house, my family feels more secure, no longer worrying about rain leaks and wind like before. This is the motivation for us to work hard and raise our children.” Vice Chairwoman of Nhon Hoi Commune People’s Committee Ly Thi Tuyet Trinh said: “Each house given is another family that feels secure in staying on the land, staying on the border, not migrating freely, not falling into poverty. This is the foundation to maintain the border from the people’s hearts.”

In the border commune of Giang Thanh, female militia member Tran Thanh Tu Trinh has done a good job at the Commune Military Command. However, the income of non-professional commune-level cadres is still low, so Ms. Trinh does not dare to think about building a house. Every day, she stays in an old, dilapidated house, patched together from wood and corrugated iron, full of termites.

Every time it rains, her whole family holds a basin on their stomachs, catching every drop to prevent the house from flooding. She was given priority to buy land in the Nam Vinh Te residential area, but she still struggles, not having enough money to build a house. Like Ms. Tien, the "support" of 60 million VND from the Military Region 9 Command has urged her to borrow and save to build a spacious and comfortable house of more than 120 square meters.

“On October 3, the local authorities and sponsors came to hand over the house, but we have moved in these past few days. The house is airy, clean, and we no longer have to worry about leaks from rain or sunlight. The whole family is extremely happy. Hopefully, in the future, when business is good, I will be able to help other poor households have a home like mine,” Trinh shared.

An Giang is a province with a border of more than 100km adjacent to Cambodia. The lives of people here are still difficult, especially in the border communes far from the center. Therefore, building shelters for poor households not only supports socio -economic development but also contributes to consolidating a solid "people's heart position".

The “Border Shelter” program has been implemented for many years, carrying the message of the close bond between the army and the people, between the government and the people in the border areas. Since 2020, hundreds of poor and near-poor households in the province have been supported to build or repair houses thanks to social security programs. In particular, “Border Shelter” is a bright spot, targeting the most disadvantaged groups - families who are both in need and living in areas important to national defense and security.

The handover of the house to Ms. Do Thi Cam Tien and Ms. Tran Thanh Tu Trinh is also part of a series of activities towards the 95th anniversary of Vietnamese Women's Day (October 20, 1930 - October 20, 2025). Through this, the armed forces and local authorities want to send a message of gratitude and care for the lives of poor women and single women, contributing to reducing the burden on their shoulders.

From a social perspective, each “Border Shelter” not only has the meaning of settling down but also contributes to promoting and mobilizing people, businesses, and philanthropists to join hands for the poor. This resonance creates lasting strength, helping the poverty reduction effort in border areas achieve specific and practical results.

“We always consider mass mobilization work and taking care of people’s lives as important political tasks, closely linked to national defense and security tasks. Only when people are well-off can the border be secure,” Colonel Chau Chac, Deputy Political Commissar of the Provincial Military Command, affirmed.

Each brick and each wall in the “Border Shelter” is filled with love and affection, contributing to lighting up the faith in the hearts of poor people in the border areas. When shelters continue to be built along the border, it means that the border is protected not only by guns and fences but also by a kind heart, by the sharing and companionship of the whole community.
