In the flow of modern urban development, historical memories and cultural heritage are not only the "spiritual baggage" of the community but have soon become a special resource for sustainable tourism development.
In Ho Chi Minh City, memory tourism is being placed in a new context after merging with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau , opening up a large connecting space to exploit and promote historical values in the area.
Following the world tourism trend, traditional types such as landscape, resort, culinary, conference tourism, etc. are showing signs of saturation, and the demand for cultural and heritage experiences is increasing. This requires Ho Chi Minh City to seek and promote unique tourism resources, associated with local identity and historical memories. In particular, when the city determines to develop cultural industry, aiming to become a regional tourism center, memory tourism emerges as an advantage.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has many "red addresses" associated with war memories such as: Cu Chi tunnels, Long Phuoc tunnels, Thong Nhat Hall, War Remnants Museum, Nha Rong Wharf, Ho Lang, War Zone D, Minh Dam base, etc. These are "living museums" of the fighting spirit and sacrifice of the Southern army and people, familiar destinations for students, international students and tourists, vivid evidence of the role of traditional education in today's urban life.
However, practical lessons from many countries show that developing memory tourism without direction can lead to two risks: commercializing the “pain of war”, causing disgust; or abusing memory space for closed goals, lacking dialogue. The clearest lesson is that some tourist attractions in Southeast Asia have turned bunkers and prisons from World War II into tourist attractions, distorting historical values, leading to negative reactions from local communities.
To promote historical - cultural - traditional values, avoiding unnecessary "mistakes", Ho Chi Minh City has advocated maintaining the commemorative - educational nature of memory heritage, while at the same time connecting with community cultural experiences, "activating" memory heritage into a vibrant space, where the past and present dialogue together.
In the picture of sustainable development, memory tourism in Ho Chi Minh City has many advantages: a widespread system of historical and revolutionary relics; a community foundation attached to memorial ceremonies; the ability to connect between regions to create a chain of destinations rich in educational value. More importantly, these are not only new products, but also a channel to foster patriotism, nurture identity, and create spiritual motivation for the young generation.
In the process of open development of Ho Chi Minh City, memory tourism is a "golden space" - both enriching the urban identity and creating a unique competitive advantage on the international tourism map.
Developing memory tourism in the right direction also contributes to realizing the aspiration of building Ho Chi Minh City into a cultural and tourism center of regional and international stature.
