National Assembly decides to shorten XV term, new election on March 15, 2026

On the morning of May 21, continuing the program of the 9th Session of the 15th National Assembly , Secretary General of the National Assembly, Head of the National Assembly Office Le Quang Tung presented the draft Resolution on shortening the term of the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term; Election day for deputies to the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term.

Immediately after the presentation, the National Assembly voted to approve the entire content of the draft Resolution. As a result, all 449/449 National Assembly deputies present voted in favor, reaching a rate of 100%.

The National Assembly resolved to shorten the term of the 15th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2021-2026 term.

The election day for the 16th National Assembly and People's Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

At the same time, the First Session of the 16th National Assembly shall be convened no later than 60 days from the election date. For People's Councils at all levels, the First Session shall be convened no later than 45 days from the election date.

The Resolution also requests the National Assembly Standing Committee, the Government, the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, the Supreme People's Court, the Supreme People's Procuracy, the Nationalities Council , the National Assembly Committees, the National Assembly delegations, National Assembly deputies, the People's Councils, People's Council deputies, and relevant agencies and organizations within the scope of their functions and tasks to promptly and fully implement the contents of the Resolution.

Previously, presenting this content in the morning session of May 12, Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Nguyen Thi Thanh stated that, based on the Party's policies and practical requirements, it is necessary to shorten the time between the National Party Congress and the first session of the National Assembly and the People's Council of the new term to promptly complete high-level personnel, carry out the assignment of new-term Party Committee members to ensure synchronization, overallness, continuous stability, and connection of key cadres in Party, State, Government, Fatherland Front agencies, and socio- political organizations. At the same time, Party Committees at all levels of the new term promptly implement the Resolution of the 14th National Party Congress and Party Congresses at all levels.
