According to the reporter's records, the section of National Highway 80 from Ta Lua Bridge (Bridge No. 5) to Hamlet No. 8, Son Kien Commune is degraded. Many sections are full of potholes on the road surface, as if they are trapping traffic participants. More dangerously, when it rains, these potholes are flooded, if not careful, the vehicle will fall into the hole, posing a very high risk of traffic accidents.
Mr. PH, a resident of Son Kien commune, said: “Previously, this road was not much damaged, but large trucks traveling at high frequency caused the road surface to peel off. Over time, the peeling areas were not repaired in time, creating large potholes. When it rains, water accumulates in the depressions, forming puddles, and many times motorbikes have fallen into the potholes, but luckily they were fine. I think, if this situation continues, it will be dangerous for road users.”
Ms. NTNL, who also lives along Highway 80, said that there are many schools on the road through Son Kien commune, so if the above situation continues, it will be dangerous for students going to school. “I don’t dare let my nephew ride his bike to school because for the past month, the storms have been lasting, so the road has deteriorated and is now even more damaged. People living in this area are used to it and know the way to avoid it, but drivers from other places often crash into potholes. Vehicles going in the opposite direction are also prone to collisions because they weave to avoid potholes. I have collided with other vehicles 4 times because I only paid attention to avoid potholes and not to avoid other vehicles,” Ms. L said.
People living along Highway 80 are also upset about the dust caused by the peeling rock layer after temporarily filling the damaged areas. When large trucks pass by, rocks are thrown to both sides of the road, making people worried. Mr. N.D.D, a resident of Son Kien commune, said: “I see that these holes have been filled many times, but the quality is not guaranteed. They only last for a short time because when it rains and large trucks pass by, the damage is as bad as before. The situation is even worse than before because dust and gravel from the filled areas are thrown everywhere, making it easy for the wheels to slip if driving at high speed. I am a local and know the road well, but I have still fallen off my bike many times at night. The road surface is not flat, making it difficult for road users to avoid potholes, subsidence, and other vehicles.”
Faced with the above situation, people hope that the authorities will soon repair and upgrade National Highway 80 through Son Kien Commune to ensure safety for road users and people living along this route. In addition, it is necessary to add warning signs and reflectors because this section of the highway not only has potholes but also many curves with limited visibility, posing a high risk of traffic collisions, especially at night.
