Converting IELTS scores for university admission: some schools give 10 points, some schools fail

The admission method using IELTS certificate is applied by many schools, but the way to convert scores is different for each school.

Below are statistics on the conversion of IELTS scores (scale 9.0) into admission scores (scale 10) in the 2024 admission season.

Looking at the updated table of converted scores with IELTS certificates in the admission methods of some universities this year, it can be seen that almost each school has its own conversion method.

The difference in the converted scores of schools is also different, even with a large difference. For example, the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) converts IELTS 4.5 to 8.0 points, but at the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University), IELTS 6.0 is converted to 8.0 points.

Or with an IELTS certificate of 5.5, the University of Economics and Law (Ho Chi Minh City National University) converted it to 7.5 points, the National Economics University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry converted it to 8.0 points, the University of Technical Education of Ho Chi Minh City and the University of Transport converted it to 8.5 points, Phan Chu Trinh University converted it to 9 points, and the University of Information Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University) converted it to 9.5 points.

To convert to 10 points, candidates applying to Foreign Trade University need IELTS from 8.0 or higher. At Hanoi University of Civil Engineering, candidates only need IELTS 5.5 to be converted to 10 points. At Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, IELTS 4.5 is converted to 10 points.

In 2024, some universities will directly admit candidates with IELTS certificates. The IELTS score for direct admission also depends on each school, for example, FPT University and Phenikaa University consider IELTS 6.0 or higher, Hoa Sen University and Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry from IELTS 5.5, Ho Chi Minh City University of Management and Technology from IELTS 5.0.

Some universities do not convert IELTS scores, but consider adding points when considering admission with the corresponding IELTS score. This score varies from school to school.

For example, candidates with IELTS 5.5 will only get 0.25 points added by Hanoi University of Pharmacy in the admission method using foreign language certificates, while the Academy of Cryptography Technology will get 1.5 points added.

Or an IELTS score of 8.0 is added 3.0 points by Hanoi Pedagogical University with the corresponding admission method, while Hanoi University of Pharmacy adds 1.5 points, and Cryptography Engineering Academy adds 2.5 points.
