Mr. Le Duc Hieu's family (village 1) has a stable life thanks to goat farming.

Mr. Le Duc Hieu's family (village 1) has been a poor household for many years, life is extremely difficult, mainly depending on a few fields and unstable hired jobs. In order to help the family rise up, in 2023, Vu Quang commune supported 3 breeding goats from the poverty reduction program.

Mr. Hieu said: "The family is very happy, having a livelihood model, we feel more motivated. In particular, with the enthusiastic guidance of agricultural officers on farming techniques, breeding and disease prevention, the family quickly grasped the care process."

Mr. Hieu's goats are growing well.

"Goats are omnivorous and are suitable for the climate here, so raising them is not too difficult. From the initial 3 goats, I now have more than 20. My family recently sold 5 goats for nearly 15 million VND, and we are focusing on taking care of the rest to increase the herd," Mr. Hieu excitedly shared.

Similar to Mr. Hieu, Mr. Dong Ngoc Ha's family (village 5) has also stabilized their lives after receiving support of 3 breeding goats in 2023. After more than two years, he has multiplied the herd and sold 13 goats with a total revenue of nearly 30 million VND, a significant income for a farming household in the mountainous region.

Mr. Dong Ngoc Ha (village 5) carefully feeds his goats.

According to Mr. Ha, the secret lies in maintaining a healthy herd, proactively providing food sources and not depending on the season. His family has now planted more elephant grass and used forest leaves as food reserves, ensuring a year-round source of nutrition.

"Goats reproduce quickly, eat grass and forest leaves around the house so the cost is not much. Selling a few litters each year will provide a stable source of income. I think raising goats is a suitable business for this area. In the near future, my family will expand the scale to develop a sustainable economy ," said Mr. Ha.

Raising goats helps poor families in Vu Quang commune develop their economy.

In 2024, Mr. Nguyen Van Quang's family (Ngan Kieu village) received 6 goats from the commune's poverty reduction program. Thanks to this support, the family boldly built a solid barn and took good care of the animals, so the animals always grew and developed quickly.

"At first, I was quite worried about taking care of the goats. However, with the guidance of the commune's agricultural officers on how to build a high, airy barn, regular vaccinations and a scientific diet, the goats grew quickly. Up to now, the family has sold 6 goats for nearly 18 million VND. We are very happy and will multiply the herd in the near future to stabilize our income."

The success of goat farming models in the households of Mr. Hieu, Mr. Ha or Mr. Quang shows that the goat farming model in Vu Quang commune not only helps people increase their income but also contributes to changing their awareness in the way of doing business. Many households have known how to connect, share experiences, invest in solid barns, and apply selective breeding techniques to improve the quality of the herd.

According to the People's Committee of Vu Quang commune, from 2022 to now, the whole commune has 21 households supported to develop a goat farming model, with a total herd of 76 goats. From this source of support, many households have risen out of poverty and stabilized their lives. In particular, in addition to supporting breeding animals, the commune also directed relevant units to organize technical training courses, instructing people on how to care for goats, build barns, select breeds, and vaccinate regularly... This is an important factor to help people maintain and develop sustainable herds.

Ms. Phan Thi Thuy Hang - Head of the Economic Department of Vu Quang Commune said: "Supporting disadvantaged people in the commune to develop livestock, especially the goat farming model, is one of the key solutions in the local sustainable poverty reduction program. In the coming time, the commune will continue to coordinate with specialized units to provide technical support and expand the scale of the model to help people stabilize their lives and gradually escape poverty."
