In the context of many poor and disadvantaged households in rural areas struggling to find a way to develop a sustainable economy , the model of raising breeding sows in Huong Pho commune is proving to be clearly effective in helping families have a stable source of income and creating a foundation to escape poverty. From the first breeding cows, many people have gradually found a "livelihood buoy", opening up an effective way to do business.

In Pho Huong village, since her husband unfortunately passed away in an accident, Ms. Dao Thi Ha has become the poorest and most disadvantaged household in the locality. Currently, Ms. Ha is raising 3 young children; 2 of whom are school-age and 1 is disabled. Due to their unfortunate circumstances, the life of the 4 mother and children has become increasingly difficult and deadlocked, with an unstable income that is not enough to cover expenses.
More than a year ago, the local government encouraged her to participate in the breeding model of sows. At the same time, they supported her with a sow from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction. Thanks to careful preparation in the selection of breeds, the cow quickly gave birth.

Ms. Ha shared: “I used to think about raising cows, but due to lack of capital and realizing that there was no grazing land like before, I had many concerns. However, participating in the model, through learning, I learned that raising cows in captivity is still effective. In fact, implementing the model also found it suitable for poor farmers. After a few months, the cow gave birth to its first litter, the family sold it and earned more than 6 million VND to pay off debt and cover living expenses. Last month, the sow continued to give birth to its second litter of calves, which will be a valuable savings for the whole family.”
Thanks to this source of livelihood, Mrs. Ha has more motivation to actively work and produce. Through our conversation, we clearly see her belief in escaping poverty. Since being supported, the poor woman has boldly borrowed more fields for production, and is willing to take on heavy jobs such as construction work, planting trees for hire, etc.
With support from the program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, Ms. Ha and her children now have a more stable and cozy home; from poor to near-poor and are continuing to strive to rise up on their own.

In Yen Thang village, from a supportive breeding cow, Mr. Tran Thanh Quyen now has a herd of 4 cows, which is the "industry" that helps him overcome the most difficult time of his family. As a young and determined couple, although Mr. Quyen and his wife were not well-off before, they still had a comfortable life. But since one of their children became seriously ill, all of their previous income has been spent on treatment, so life has gradually become difficult and poor. To support his family to overcome difficulties, the local government has helped him build a model of breeding cows. With support, he boldly borrowed more money from relatives to buy another sow in the hope of creating a long-term direction.
Mr. Quyen said: “The herd of cows has grown steadily and has now given birth, helping the family save money in case the children fall ill. There are times when we are in a difficult situation, but seeing the herd grow up gives us more motivation and confidence to continue to move forward. From now on, I will leave the care of the cows to my wife, and I will look for a job to have a more stable source of income.”

Stories like those of Mrs. Ha and Mr. Quyen are no longer rare in the flood center of Huong Pho. From the resources of the national target program for sustainable poverty reduction, each year about 75 livelihood models are given by the locality to poor households, near-poor households, and families in difficult circumstances... Among them, the breeding sow model is considered one of the most effective directions for disadvantaged households. In addition to providing funding for buying breeding animals, the local government also supports training in breeding techniques and regularly monitors to support households when problems arise. Some households, after being given livelihoods, not only maintain the supported assets but also proactively multiply the herd and expand the scale.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Quyen - Chairman of Huong Pho Commune People's Committee said: "The provision of livelihoods is not simply material support, but more importantly, it is to create motivation and arouse the will of self-reliance of the people. We identify the most important viewpoint in implementing the program as supporting the right people, the right needs. Many poor households in Huong Pho now have capital, support and confidence to strive. This is also the sustainable value of the program. Currently, the locality is also reviewing and continuing to effectively implement the sustainable poverty reduction program in the area from supporting livelihoods and production models."
