Each sao of water spinach brings the people of Quynh Hoa commune (Quynh Phu) an income of about 40 million VND/year.
Quynh Hoa commune has 9 villages, of which Bai Trang and Bo Trang villages grow the most water spinach in the commune with over 10 hectares. According to the people, a few decades ago, Bai village water spinach was known to many people, but only a few households grew it with an area of about 2 hectares, the rest mainly grew rice. However, due to the low efficiency of rice cultivation, people gradually switched to growing water spinach and it has brought a stable income.
Mr. Vu Tien Chuong, Director of the Commune Service Cooperative, said: The whole commune currently has 80 families growing water spinach with over 10 hectares, of which Bai Trang village accounts for over half of the area. Water spinach is an easy-to-grow vegetable, with a quick harvest time. From planting to harvest is only 15 - 20 days. Bai village water spinach is harvested year-round, but the best yield and quality are usually concentrated from April to September. On average, each hectare yields about 6 tons of vegetables. With an average selling price of 3,000 VND/bunch, at peak times up to 6,000 - 7,000 VND/bunch, after deducting costs, each sao of water spinach brings growers about 40 million VND/year, 5 - 6 times higher than rice cultivation.
Morning glory is a rustic dish, easy to prepare. Morning glory of Bai village is grown in a land rich in nutrients, trace elements, suitable for the soil, so the vegetable is green and healthy, after processing the green vegetable is crispy, sweet, fragrant, so it is very popular with restaurants and people. In the fields of Bai village, early morning or late afternoon, taking advantage of the cool weather, the members of the commune gather to harvest vegetables. This year, the price of vegetables is stable, there are few pests and diseases, so people are very excited.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoi's family in Bai Trang village grows 2 sao of vegetables, and every day her family has vegetables to sell. As soon as the vegetables are harvested, people come to buy them at a stable price of 2,000 - 3,000 VND/bunch.
Ms. Hoi shared: Water spinach can be harvested all year round. On average, each sao of land can yield 2-3 harvests per month, each harvest brings in about 2 million VND. After each harvest, we cut the roots and wait for the vegetables to sprout small buds. During the fertilization process, we follow the technical measures for safe vegetable growing according to the instructions of the cooperative, from fertilizing to spraying biological pesticides to ensure safety before harvesting. Water spinach usually yields high yields for about a year, so after a year of harvesting, we replace it. Before transplanting, the fields must be plowed and harrowed thoroughly, and lime powder must be sprinkled to treat fungi and clean up pest residues, then organic fertilizers must be used to decompose the soil and increase fertility.
The area of water spinach cultivation in Quynh Hoa commune (Quynh Phu) is over 10 hectares, mainly concentrated in the two villages of Bai Trang and Bo Trang.
In 2014, Quynh Hoa commune reached the new rural area (NTM) goal and is striving to reach the advanced NTM goal in 2025. According to the National Criteria for New Rural Areas and the National Criteria for Advanced NTM Communes in the period 2021 - 2025, a commune that meets the advanced NTM standard must have OCOP products and Quynh Hoa commune has chosen Bai village water spinach as a local specialty product.
Mr. Vu Tien Chuong, Director of the Commune Service Cooperative, added: Up to now, the procedures to recognize Bai village water spinach as a 3-star OCOP product are in the finalization stage. When Bai village water spinach is recognized as an OCOP product with stamp codes, barcodes, and traceability, it will bring great advantages to the locality in terms of economic value, contributing to improving people's lives.
