Vegetable prices increase after storms

The impact of two consecutive storms No. 10 and No. 11 caused many vegetable growing areas in Tuyen Quang and neighboring provinces to be deeply flooded, resulting in a sharp decrease in output. The temporary shortage of supply has caused the price of green vegetables at local markets in the province to increase in recent days.

Vegetable prices at Phan Thiet market, Minh Xuan ward increased slightly after the storm.

According to records at traditional markets in the province such as Phan Thiet market, Tam Co market (Minh Xuan ward), Ha Giang central market (Ha Giang 2 ward), Dai market (Thai Binh commune), Km15 market (Yen Son commune)... the prices of green vegetables have all increased sharply, on average from 20 to 40% compared to before.

At Phan Thiet market, the price of Malabar spinach has increased from 8,000 VND/bunch to 12,000 VND/bunch, taro has increased from 25,000 VND/kg to 30,000 VND/kg, squash has increased from 15,000 VND/kg to 20,000 VND/kg. Jute and Malabar spinach have increased from 8,000 VND to 12,000 VND/bunch, water spinach has increased from 5,000 VND to 8,000 VND/bunch. Chinese cabbage and Chinese cabbage have fluctuated from 20,000 - 30,000 VND/kg...

According to a survey, most of the vegetables and tubers in the traditional markets in the central area of the province are imported from the night market in An Tuong ward, where goods from neighboring provinces such as Vinh Phuc and Hanoi are concentrated, along with a large amount of vegetables supplied and consumed by people in many communes in the province.

However, according to traders, due to the impact of storms No. 10 and No. 11, many people's vegetable growing areas were damaged, making it difficult to import goods. Ms. Vu Thi Son, a trader at Phan Thiet market (Minh Xuan ward), said: "On rainy and flooded days, vegetable farms were greatly affected, goods were scarce, transportation was difficult, causing import prices here to increase 1-1.5 times compared to before the storm, forcing us to adjust selling prices. On days of heavy rain, goods arrived in small quantities, people rushed to buy and stock up, making it even more scarce. However, this situation is only temporary, when the weather is sunny, more new vegetables will come to the market, and vegetable and root prices will stabilize again."

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, as of October 5, the entire province had more than 8,000 hectares of crops affected by the circulation of storm No. 10, including 4,398 hectares of rice, 2,181 hectares of corn, 520 hectares of vegetables, nearly 1,000 hectares of perennial trees; 120 fish cages and more than 340 hectares of aquaculture were completely lost. The floods slowed down the progress of harvesting and transporting agricultural products, directly affecting people's lives.

The Department of Agriculture has directed localities to urgently drain water, clear water flows, dredge canals, operate pumping stations, and prevent prolonged flooding. As soon as the weather cleared, forces were mobilized to help people harvest rice. Areas of vegetables and fruit trees that could recover were rebuilt, pruned, cared for, and fertilized; completely damaged areas were instructed to grow short-term winter crops such as corn, potatoes, and vegetables to compensate for output and ensure food security in 2025.

Despite being heavily affected by two consecutive storms, with the proactiveness of the authorities and people, the consumer market in Tuyen Quang province remains stable.
