BHG - In late May and early June, the rice fields in Quang Binh district turn a golden yellow. Across the fields, farmers are bustling with activity as they begin the harvest season. The sounds of combine harvesters blend with the cheerful chatter and the fragrant aroma of freshly harvested rice. Despite the hard work and sweat, the farmers are overjoyed to have produced plump, golden grains of rice and a bountiful harvest.

From early morning, before the sun rose high, the people of Ha Quang village, Vi Thuong commune, were already out in the fields harvesting their spring rice crop. Their nimble hands quickly harvested each plump rice stalk, gathering them into bundles and transferring them to threshing machines so they could be brought home in time for drying. Long Van Nui happily shared: “Compared to the previous season, this year's rice harvest is much better. Along with 12 other households in the village, my family participated in the first trial planting of the NTS01 rice variety on an area of 0.18 hectares. This rice variety has good resistance; even with a prolonged cold spell at the beginning of the season, the rice still grew normally, without being affected by pests, fungi, or bacteria. The rice plants are healthy, less prone to lodging, with long panicles and firm, uniform grains. The average yield is estimated at 6.3 tons/ha.”

Vi Thuong commune is one of the key rice-growing areas in Quang Binh district, with a total area of 204 hectares. The majority of rice varieties are purebred, high-quality hybrids such as Viet Lai 20, HKT99, Thien Uu 8, and Nhi Uu 838. In addition, Ha Quang village is conducting a trial of the NTS0 rice variety on 1 hectare. Most farmers planted early spring rice, so the rice is currently in the ripening stage and being harvested simultaneously. The estimated yield is 62.2 quintals/hectare; the estimated production is 1,273 tons. This is a positive result from promoting the application of science and technology in production, a rational variety structure, and a guaranteed planting schedule. Based on this, the commune will continue to promote and encourage the widespread adoption of high-yield rice varieties and concentrated planting to improve the economic efficiency for farmers.

Bang Lang commune is one of the pioneers in implementing land consolidation and exchange, applying tray seedling cultivation and transplanting machines, creating a clear transformation in agricultural production. From fragmented, small plots of land, the fields have now been re-planned into concentrated farming areas, facilitating the introduction of mechanization in planting and harvesting. As a result, people reduce labor, save production costs, and rice yields are increasingly stable. This spring, the entire commune planted 189 hectares, achieving 100% of the plan. In addition to hybrid rice, farmers also favor purebred rice varieties such as PC15, Te Nuong Ha Giang, and local glutinous rice. These rice varieties produce soft, sticky, fragrant grains, which fetch high prices in the market.

In a vibrant atmosphere of enthusiastic labor and production, the communes of Xuan Giang, Tien Yen, Yen Binh town, Tan Trinh, Tan Bac, etc., are busily entering the harvest season. The expected rice yield in these localities is estimated at over 60 quintals/hectare. With a total rice area of 1,800 hectares, Quang Binh district has directed communes and towns to encourage farmers to harvest rice according to the principle of "better to harvest while still green than wait until it's overripe." Simultaneously, they are to prepare the land immediately after harvesting, plowing deep into the rice stubble, retaining water in the fields, and spreading lime to limit pests and diseases before sowing the summer rice crop. Priority is given to expanding the area using ultra-short and short-day rice varieties with high yields, good quality, and resistance to pests and diseases. Direct sowing should be limited in low-lying areas without irrigation and prone to flooding, and all resources should be allocated to sowing as early as possible, striving to complete sowing by the beginning of July.

With the diligence and creativity of the farmers and the close guidance of the government, confidence and enthusiasm will be further boosted for the people to continue a new production season with the expectation of achieving high yields and good quality, contributing to ensuring food security and successfully fulfilling the agricultural production targets for 2025.
