| Mr. Luong Van Ninh's family switched from growing tangerines to cultivating nearly 2.5 hectares of oranges, yielding high economic returns. |
Following the main tangerine harvest, people in Bach Thong commune are now focusing on harvesting oranges to supply the Tet market. This year, the orange crop is abundant and ripened at the right time, making it easy to sell and bringing expectations of a stable income.
Mr. Luong Van Ninh's family, residing in Tong Ngay village, currently owns 2.5 hectares of orange trees. This Tet holiday, he expects to earn several hundred million dong.
According to Mr. Ninh, favorable weather conditions helped the oranges ripen evenly, resulting in attractive appearance and guaranteed quality. Early season prices ranged from 15-20 thousand VND/kg; as Tet (Lunar New Year) approached, the price of first-grade oranges increased to around 35-40 thousand VND/kg, motivating farmers to focus on caring for and harvesting at the right time.
Previously, the Quang Thuan area, now Bach Thong commune, was known as a key tangerine growing region in the North. In recent years, along with tangerines, people have gradually expanded the area planted with oranges, raising the total area of oranges and tangerines in the commune to over 100 hectares.
Thanks to the suitable soil and climate conditions of the area, Bach Thong oranges and tangerines have unique characteristics in terms of quality and flavor. In particular, the harvest time coinciding with the Lunar New Year creates an additional advantage in terms of sales.
According to Ms. Ma Thi Man, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairwoman of the People's Council of Bach Thong commune, this year's orange and tangerine harvest is bountiful, bringing joy to the people. However, the selling price has not increased significantly compared to previous years and is not yet commensurate with the potential and value of the product. In the coming time, the locality will focus on planning the planting areas and concentrating on resolving difficulties in the market for oranges and tangerines.

Currently, Bach Thong commune has over 500 hectares of oranges and tangerines; the products have been granted geographical indication and are gradually establishing their position in the market.
To enhance value and stabilize output, the locality is promoting the application of science and technology, organizing production by region, and building sustainable production-consumption linkages.
Cham Thi Ngai, a long-time citrus grower in Tong Ngay village, said: "During the period leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), when the selling price reaches around 40,000 VND/kg, people can significantly improve their income. However, prices remain unstable, and consumption is mainly through small-scale sales and dependence on traders. According to Ms. Ngai, the local soil and climate conditions are very suitable for growing citrus trees; the biggest difficulty currently remains finding a market for the product."
Oranges and tangerines continue to be identified as key crops, contributing to increased income for the people of Bach Thong. Organizing production in a concentrated manner, linked with brand building and expanding consumer markets, is considered a necessary direction for the stable and sustainable development of local agricultural products.
