Rudiger apologizes

Center-back Antonio Rudiger issued an apology message after his controversial actions in Real Madrid's 2-3 defeat to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final early on April 27.

Rudiger wrote on his personal page: "There is no excuse for my actions. I apologize to the referee and everyone who was disappointed by my behavior."

The German centre-back stressed: "We played a very good match from the second half. But after 111 minutes, I no longer had enough strength to help the team. And before the final whistle, I made a mistake."

At La Cartuja Stadium in Sevilla, Rudiger was furious with the referee as Real Madrid lost 2-3 to Barcelona in the 2024/25 Copa del Rey final. Extra time saw Real players completely lose control. Rudiger flew into a rage after his team was penalised.

According to Cadena SER , Rudiger could receive a 4-12 match ban from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). In an official post-match report sent to the RFEF, referee De Burgos Bengoetxea confirmed that Rudiger threw “a foreign object” that almost hit the man in black.

Rudiger was immediately shown a red card. He kept muttering something and tried to rush onto the pitch to confront the referee, before being stopped by his teammates. When the match ended, the centre-back continued to rush towards referee Bengoetxea, but was stopped by goalkeeping coach Luis Llopis and goalkeeper Andrii Lunin.
