Tan Son Nhat International Airport announced that it expects to handle 908 flights on February 5th. This includes 458 departures (320 domestic and 138 international) and 450 arrivals (317 domestic and 133 international).
The number of visitors expected today is over 132,000, higher than the total for the past two weekend days. This includes 87,915 departures (64,696 domestic and 23,219 international) and 44,172 arrivals (21,487 domestic and 22,685 international).
These days, the influx of people returning home for Tet (Lunar New Year) has caused Tan Son Nhat Airport to be packed with passengers from dawn until late at night. In addition, the ripple effect of fog and bad weather in recent days has caused many flights to and from Thanh Hoa, Hue, Da Nang, Hanoi , Vinh, Buon Ma Thuot, Da Lat, etc., to be delayed.
According to a quick report from the Tan Son Nhat Airport Operations Center, from 0:00 on February 1st to 16:00 on February 3rd, 659 out of 1,103 scheduled flights at the airport were delayed (accounting for over 50% of the total number of flights). In addition, 40 flights were canceled due to weather conditions.
From early morning on February 5, 2024, the number of people queuing at the check-in and baggage drop-off counters of Vietnam Airlines , Bamboo Airways, and Vietjet Air was overwhelming. The online check-in areas of many airlines were also crowded. To support the public and passengers, and to minimize congestion at the airport, the Youth Union of Tan Son Nhat International Airport deployed personnel to assist passengers, such as guiding passengers, helping passengers drop off luggage through the X-ray machine, providing flight information, and collecting trolleys for passengers.
Mr. Nguyen Nam Tien, Deputy Director of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, said: "As in previous years, at the end of the year, the airport also coordinates with relevant units to organize conferences to finalize flight operation plans during the New Year and Lunar New Year holidays. At the same time, the airport presents plans suitable to the actual situation, such as plans for off-peak, mid-peak, and peak periods."
According to the Deputy Director of Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the domestic terminal will experience the same high passenger volume during the Lunar New Year holiday as in previous years. "The peak is expected to be over 140,000 arrivals/departures, approximately 900 flights per day, with peak days potentially increasing to 950 flights per day," said Mr. Nguyen Nam Tien.
