After graduating from a teacher training university with a degree in mathematics in 2013, Danh Anh Vo began working at Thanh Loc Junior and Senior High School. In July 2024, he transferred to Giong Rieng High School. Throughout his career, Mr. Vo has consistently sought out and learned effective teaching methods, applying artificial intelligence (AI) to create engaging learning experiences for his students.
During his teaching career, Mr. Vo noticed that many students struggled with mathematics due to its abstract nature and the high level of logical thinking required, especially in topics like sequences, arithmetic progressions, and geometric progressions. This is crucial knowledge in the 11th-grade math curriculum, but it often hinders students' self-study. When faced with difficult problems, students ask their teachers for guidance. However, with a large number of students, teachers cannot answer all questions and provide detailed guidance to each student in a timely manner. "With the desire to build a support tool that can accompany, guide, and answer students' questions, I initiated the creation of a chatbot to help students access knowledge more easily," Mr. Vo said.
To build the chatbot tool, Mr. Vo asked himself two questions: How to build a chatbot that can effectively support 11th-grade students in self-learning mathematics content on sequences, arithmetic progressions, and geometric progressions? Can the chatbot help students improve their self-learning skills and enhance their math learning effectiveness?
After a period of self-study and research, Mr. Vo successfully built an AI-integrated chatbot using Coze and Blogger to create a website. He also built a highly reliable database for the chatbot that closely follows the curriculum. The chatbot is built on a three-tier model: The communication tier allows students to interact with the chatbot, inputting questions or problems they need solved. The processing tier uses an AI system to analyze the question, identify the problem, and provide appropriate guidance.
Since August 2024, Mr. Vo's initiative has been put into use and has brought many benefits, helping students improve their self-study skills and enhance their math learning effectiveness. “The chatbot is like my 24/7 tutor, but without any cost. Whenever I encounter difficulties in solving math problems, I communicate with the chatbot. The interesting thing about this tool is that it doesn't give immediate answers but guides me step-by-step, helping me better understand the logic and how to solve the problems. This helps me develop logical thinking, patience, and problem-solving skills,” shared Giang Kim Phung, a student in class 11T3 at Giong Rieng High School. The results of the math test on the case of sequences, arithmetic progressions, and geometric progressions for all 43 students were 7 points or higher.
To make the initiative truly effective, Mr. Vo also faced many difficulties and conducted numerous trials. Mr. Vo stated: “The biggest challenge was the technical aspect of AI training. When providing data, I had to train the AI to understand and accurately follow pedagogical requirements, such as suggesting step-by-step solutions to exercises and not answering immediately… This required many trials and adjustments to the commands. Sometimes the chatbot would give incorrect answers, deviate from the intended path, or not follow the defined structure, forcing me to constantly optimize the constraints.”
As the Vice President of the school's Youth Union, Mr. Vo organized many activities and movements for students to participate in, guiding them on how to use AI correctly. He also guided students in carrying out projects to participate in school and provincial-level science and technology competitions, achieving high results.
