Riverbank erosion threatens the lives of hundreds of households.
(Baohatinh.vn) - Successive storms and floods have caused increasingly serious riverbank erosion, "swallowing up" gardens, crops, and threatening the lives of people in Duc Quang commune (Ha Tinh province).

The Lạch Trổ River – the name of a branch of the La River flowing through the villages of Hạ Tứ and Hoa Đình (Đức Quang commune) – is approximately 2 km long. As a downstream area, it is frequently flooded during storms and floods, with strong currents causing riverbank erosion and threatening the lives of many households.
In 2025, Duc Quang commune, like many other localities in Ha Tinh province, suffered from successive heavy rains and floods, especially typhoons No. 5 and No. 10 with strong intensity, causing prolonged and widespread flooding. After each flood, large areas of land along the riverbanks were deeply eroded and washed away by the swirling water, making the erosion situation increasingly serious.
When the floodwaters recede, large areas of land along the riverbanks are revealed to have deep, cavernous sinkholes that encroach upon gardens and residential areas.
Mr. Dang Xuan Thuy (Hoa Dinh village, Duc Quang commune) shared: “ From last year until now, the landslide has encroached nearly 5 meters into my family's garden. Many large cracks have appeared in the garden, and if a few more floods occur, it could be swept away. Every rainy season, we residents live in constant anxiety and worry because the landslide is becoming increasingly serious ."
According to local authorities, Hoa Dinh and Ha Tu villages currently have about 500 households, of which more than 100 households living along the river are directly affected by erosion. Many erosion points have encroached close to the foundations of people's houses, posing a risk of further encroachment by the river during future rainy and stormy seasons.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Lam (Ha Tu village, Duc Quang commune) said: “ My house is right next to the riverbank, and every rainy season we have to move our belongings and livestock to higher ground to avoid damage. The erosion is happening continuously and becoming increasingly serious, causing great concern among the people. If the riverbank continues to erode, not only our gardens but also our houses are at risk of being swept away .”
Mr. Dang Thanh Binh (in the middle) - Head of Hoa Dinh village, Duc Quang commune, said: “As a downstream area along the river, the villagers face many difficulties and hardships every rainy season. From 2025 to the present, the erosion has become serious, with some sections of the riverbed eroding inland by 5-7 meters, creating cliffs about 1.5-2 meters high. Through village meetings, the people have all expressed their desire for investment in building embankments to limit erosion and stabilize their lives in the long term.” Local authorities have directly surveyed and documented the situation in areas severely affected by landslides.
Duc Quang commune is located downstream of the La River, so it is frequently affected by floods every year. Especially during the rainy season, the large volume of water flowing from upstream causes serious landslides.
The nearly 2-kilometer-long Lạch Trổ river is experiencing increasingly severe erosion, directly affecting hundreds of households along its banks. Without prompt remedial action, large areas of land are at risk of further erosion and being swept away by the water. Local authorities, along with relevant departments and agencies, have surveyed the area and proposed that the competent authorities provide support for the construction of an embankment to ensure long-term stability for the residents.
